Sharp rebound in business births in May 2020 Enterprise births - May 2020

In May 2020, the number of business births for all enterprises rebounded sharply after a two-month drop (+59.9% after –33.4% in April, seasonally and working-day adjusted) due to the containment of the population. In the context of the uncontainment, conventional businesses start-ups rebounded sharply (+64.4% after –41.8%) as well as micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+56.0% after –24.1%), without however reaching their pre-crisis levels.

Rebound in business births in all economic activities

In May 2020, the number of business births rebounded in all economic activities. The upsurge is the highest in real estate activities (+130.1%), transportation and storage (+122.4%) and trade (+88.8%). The sectors that contributed the most to the overall rise are trade (+12.4 points)*, business support activities (+11.8 points) and transportation and storage (+10.4 points).

Strong decrease in business births over the three last months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last three months decreased strongly in comparison with the same months in 2019 (–31.0% after –21.6% in April). Business support activities was the sector that contributed the most to the overall decrease (–12 400 business births, which comes to a contribution of –6.1 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in business and other management consultancy activities (–3 900 business births over the last three months).

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months went up (+2.3%), but the containment impact is more and more perceptible with a slow-down in comparison with the number of business start-ups totted up in April (+5.3%) and in March (+11.8%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Less than a half of business births are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In May 2020, in raw data, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses births over the last twelve months rose slightly to 47.2%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in April 2020 has been increased by 0.1 points to –33.4% instead of –33.5%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
