2020- n° 144In April 2020, manufacturing output slumped sharply again (−21.9%) Industrial production index - April 2020
In April 2020, output plummeted sharply again in the manufacturing industry (−21.9%, after −18.3%), as well as in the whole industry (−20.1%, after −16.2%). Compared to February (the last month before the start of the general lockdown), output fell by 36.2% in manufacturing and 33.1% in the whole industry.
Given the context of the general lockdown between17 March and 10 May, response rates for business survey about April 2020 (collected during May) are lower than usual. Therefore, the results presented here might be more revised than usually in the next publication, which will take into account the answers delivered late. Then, the data on which INSEE usually relies to compile the construction production index could not be processed for both March and April. In order to produce an estimation, INSEE and the statistical service of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition (SDES) relied on auxiliary data. The treatments implemented are explained in the methodological note referenced in the “Documentation” section.
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
The treatments implemented for March 2020 are explained in the methodological note referenced in the documentation section.
Manufacturing output plunged over the last three months (−17.4%)
Over the last three months, manufacturing output declined markedly in manufacturing industry (−17.4%), as well as in the whole industry (−15.8%).
Over this period, output slumped in the manufacture of transport equipment (−34.1%). It plunged in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−19.1%), in “other manufacturing”(−17.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−19.2%). It decreased more moderately in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−6.4%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−3.7%).

In April 2020, output plummeted markedly in most branches of industry
In April, output plummeted in the manufacture of transport equipment (−47.5% after −35.0%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi−trailers (−88.0% after −45.1%). Output decreased strongly again in “other manufacturing” (−22.3% after −17.7%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−24.6% after −21.0%). It declined more moderately in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−11.2% after −3.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−6.2% after −3.8%). In this last section, such activities like processing and preserving of fruit and vegetables increased. Conversely, output bounced back in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+9.0% after −30.5%), because of the restart of a refinery which was stopped for maintenance in March.
Compared to February, output plunged sharply in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi−trailers (−93.4%), in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, and other non metallic mineral product (−54.4%), in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−52.1%) and in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (−50.8%). Conversely, output decreased more moderately in pharmaceuticals (−1.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−9.8%). In addition, although down sharply, output held up better in chemicals (−22.3%).
