In March 2020, the producer prices in French industry fell by 1.6% (after –0.7% in February 2020), consequence of an economic slowdown in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decline was more pronounced on prices for the French market (–1.7% after –0.9%) than on those for foreign markets (–1.0% after –0.4%). Year on year, the producer prices in French industry declined sharply (–2.1% after –0.6%).
Given the lockdown of the population since 17 March, response rates for business survey about March 2020 (collected during April) are lower than usual. Therefore, the results presented here might be more revised than usually in the next publication, which will take into account the answers delivered late.

Producer prices in French industry: –1.6%
In March 2020, the producer prices in French industry fell by 1.6% (after –0.7% in February 2020), consequence of an economic slowdown in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decline was more pronounced on prices for the French market (–1.7% after –0.9%) than on those for foreign markets (–1.0% after –0.4%). Year on year, the producer prices in French industry declined sharply (–2.1% after –0.6%).
FRENCH MARKET: –1.7%
The French producer prices in industry for the French market kept declining strongly in March 2020 (–1.7% after –0.9%), driven down by manufactured product prices (–2.0% after –0.5%) and, to a lesser extent, by those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water. Year on year, the French producer prices in industry for the French market fell sharply in March 2020 (–2.7% after –1.2%).
Historic decline in refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products declined by 35.3% in March 2020 (after –8.7%), reaching their lowest level in 4 years. Year on year, they plummeted (–43.6% after –9.4%).

New fall in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In March 2020, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water kept declining (–0.6% after –1.8%), mainly those of electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (–0.9% after –2.0%), due notably to a reduced demand during the lockdown. Year on year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water kept decreasing sharply in March 2020 (–2.4% after –2.9%).
Decline in prices of “other industrial products”
The prices of “other industrial products” fell by 0.4% in March 2020 (after –0.2%), due to the decreases in prices of chemical products (–1.8% after –0.9%) and basic metal products (–1.4% after –0.6%), following the fall in raw material costs and in demand. Year on year, the prices of “other industrial products” kept decreasing in March 2020 (–1.7% after –1.2%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: –1.0%
In March 2020, the producer prices of French industrial products for foreign markets declined by 1.0%, after –0.4% in February 2020. They were mainly driven down by the fall in export manufactured product prices (–0.9% after –0.1%).
The export prices of refined petroleum products fell strongly (–29.6% after –10.3%), in the wake of oil prices. The export prices of the other product categories were virtually stable or decreased slightly.
Year on year, the producer prices of French industrial products for foreign markets fell back sharply in March 2020 (–0.6% after +0.4%).

Import price indices of industrial products: –3.8%
In March 2020, the import prices of industrial products plummeted (–3.8% after –1.0%), driven down by the import prices of hydrocarbons and by those of manufactured products (–1.9% after –0.1%).
The import prices for coke and refined petroleum products collapsed over one month (–37.6% after –5.0%) and even more over one year (–43.7% after –7.6%).
Year on year, the import prices of industrial products fell drastically in March 2020 (–5.2% after –1.4%).
