The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).

SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period of indices)

In February 2020, output in services decreased (−1.0% after +0.5% in January).

Services output diminished over the last three months

Over the last three months from December to February, services output decreased compared to the previous three months (−1.0%).

It went down sharply in business support activities (−1.4%): in this subsection, the decrease is more important in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−2.0%) than in administrative and business service activities (−0.6%). It also diminished in transportation and storage (−2.8%) and in real estate activities (−1.4%). By contrast, the output increased slightly in information and communication (+0.3%), in household services (+0.6%) and in accommodation and food services activities (+0.3%).

Output grew strongly over a year

In services, output of the last three months from December 2019 to February 2020 rose by 1.7% compared to the same three months over a year.

It went up sharply in information and communication (+5.0%), in business support (+1.7%), be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+1.8%) or in administrative and business service activities (+1.5%), in accommodation and food service activities (+2.3%) and in household services (+2.6%). The output was stable in real estate activities but went down in transportation and storage (−1.7%).

In February 2020, the output decreased in most of the subsections

In February 2020, output in business support activities turned down sharply (−1.4% after +1.8% in January), more in administrative and business support activities (−2.3% after +1.1%) than in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.7% after +2.3% in January). The output also decreased in transportation and storage (−1.4% after −0.5%), in accommodation and food service activities (−1.3% after +1.0%) and in information and communication (−0.6% after −0.7%). The output was stable in household services after a decrease of 2.4% in January.
