Fall in business start-ups in March 2020 Enterprise births - March 2020

In March 2020, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased strongly (–25.5% after –3.0% in February, seasonally and working-day adjusted). In the context of the Covid-19 spreading, conventional businesses start-ups collapsed (–30.0% after +0.8%) and micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased strongly (–19.6% after –7.5%).

Warning:

Due to technical difficulties related to data transmissions between Insee and a business formality center in February, some births of sole proprietorships in February have been registered in March, in particular micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations. The delay lightens slightly the decrease in March due to containment, in particular for micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations.

In March 2020, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased strongly (–25.5% after –3.0% in February, seasonally and working-day adjusted). In the context of the Covid-19 spreading, conventional businesses start-ups collapsed (–30.0% after +0.8%) and micro-entrepreneurs' registrations decreased strongly (–19.6% after –7.5%).

Strong decrease in business set-ups in all economic activities

In March 2020, the number of business start-ups decreased in all economic activities. The fall is the heaviest in accommodation and food supply activities (–36.8%) and the lightest, even sharp, in information and communication activities (–8.4%). The sectors that contributed the most to the overall rise are trade (–5.1 points)*, other services activities (–3.9 points) and construction (–3.4 points).

Fall back in business set-ups in transportation and storage over the three last months

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last three months fell back (–2.7%, after +12.3% in February and +16.2% in January). Transportation and storage was the sector that contributed the most to the overall decrease (–5 700 business start-ups, which comes to a contribution of –2.6 points)*. Within it, the strongest decrease was in other postal and mail activities including home delivery (–4 900 business start-ups over the last three months).

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last twelve months went up (+11.9%), but the containment impact is already perceptible with a strong slow-down in comparison with the number of business start-ups totted up in February (+15.4%).

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Less than a half of business set-ups are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In March 2020, in raw data, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses set up over the last twelve months is stable at 46.7%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in February 2020 has been lowered by 0.2 points to –3.0% instead of –2.8%, due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
