In October 2019, output in services turned down (−0.8% after +0.7% in September).

Services output increased over the last three months

Over the last three months (August to October), services production rose by 1.7% compared to the previous three months.

It increased sharply in business support activities (+2.2%) : in this subsection, it grew in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.0%) and in administrative and business service activities (+1.2%). Output also rose sharply in information and communication (+2.6%), in transportation and storage (+2.6%) and in accommodation and food services activities (+1.4%). It grew more slightly in real estate activities (+0.3%) and decreased in household services (−2.5%).

Output grew strongly over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose strongly over a year (+3.5%).

It went up strongly in business support (+3.5%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+4.3%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+2.9%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+5.4%), in transportation and storage (+3.6%) and in accommodation and food service activities (+4.3%). It increased more moderately in household services (+1.6%) and in real estate activities (+0.5%).

In October 2019, decrease in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage turned down in October 2019 (−2.0% after +2.2% in September), notably in land transport (−2.8% after +1.9%), in air transport (−8.5% after +9.4%) and in water transport (−14.5% after +18.4%). However, it rose again in warehousing and support for transportation (+1.4% after +0.9%).

Withdrawal in business support

In October 2019, output in business support activities fell back (−0.6% after +0.7% in September).

Output dwindled in administrative and business support activities (−0.9% after +1.0%). It decreased again in employment activities (−1.2% after −1.1%) and turned down in other administrative and business support activities (−1.1% after +3.4%), in services to building and landscape activities (−1.4% after a stability) and in activities of security and investigation (−1.8% after +1.8%). It was near stable in rental and leasing activities (−0.1% after +2.2%). It settled down in travel agency, tour operator after a decrease of 5.2% in September.

Output also dwindled in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.4% after +0.5% in September): it fell back strongly in scientific research and development (−4.9% after +1.9%) and slightly in activities of head offices and management consultancy (−0.3% after +1.3%). By contrast, it bounced back in architecture and engineering activities (+2.9% after −0.2%) and in legal and accounting activities (+0.6% after −0.9%). The output rose again in other professional, scientific and technical activities (+1.6% after +1.9%) but diminished again in advertising and market research (−0.8% after −1.4%).

Sharp downturn in household services

In October 2019, output in household services turned down sharply (−2.1% after +0.5% in September). It fell back in arts, entertainment and recreation (−3.6% after +1.4%) whereas it bounced back in other personal services production (+0.9% after −1.2%).

Near-stability in accommodation and food service activities

In October 2019, output in accommodation and food service activities was near stable again (+0.1% after +0.1% in September). It ramped up in accommodation (+0.9% after +0.1%) and remained near stable in food and beverage service activities (−0.1% after +0.2%).

Slight increase in information and communication

Output in information and communication grew slightly in October 2019 (+0.2% after −0.1% in September), due to the increase in edition (+1.7% after −0.4%), in programming and broadcasting activities (+4.8% after +0.5%), in computer programming (+0.3% after −0.1%) and in information services (+0.5% after +0.7%). However, the output dwindled in telecommunications (−1.3% after +0.4%) and decreased again in motion picture, sound recording, music publishing (−1.7% after −3.3%).
