In September 2019, output in services increased again (+0.8% after +1.4% in August).

Services output increased over the last three months

Over the last quarter (July to September), services production rose by 1.5% compared to the previous quarter.

It increased sharply in business support activities (+1.4%) : in this subsection, it grew in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+1.2%) and in administrative and business service activities (+1.6%). Output also rose sharply in information and communication (+2.5%), in transportation and storage (+1.9%) and in household services (+2.8%). It grew more slightly in accommodation and food services activities (+0.3%) and decreased in real estate activities (−0.5%).

Output grew strongly over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose strongly over a year (+4.2%).

It went up strongly in business support (+4.2%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+5.8%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.1%). It also grew sharply in information and communication (+5.8%), in transportation and storage (+3.5%), in household services (+5.6%), in accommodation and food service activities (+4.2%). It rose more moderately in real estate activities (+0.6%).

In September 2019, further rise in business support

In September 2019, output in business support activities increased sharply (+0.8% after +2.1%).

Output grew sharply in administrative and business support activities (+1.1% after −0.1%). It recovered in other administrative and business support activities (+4.0% after −0.8%), in rental and leasing activities (+2.2% after −1.8%) and in activities of security and investigation (+1.9% after −0.1%) but, on the contrary, it turned down in employment activities (−1.0% after +1.1%) and in travel agency, tour operator (−5.0% after +5.4%).

Output increased again in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.6% after +3.7% in August): it rose again in scientific research and development (+2.3% after +5.3%) and in activities of head offices and management consultancy (+1.1% after +0.2%). It bounced back in other professional, scientific and technical activities (+2.2% after −1.7%) but turned down in legal and accounting activities (−1.0% after +2.1%) and in advertising and market research (−1.1% after +6.5%).

Acceleration in transportation and storage

Output in transportation and storage ramped up in September 2019 (+2.1% after +1.4%), notably in land transport (+1.9% after +0.8%), in air transport (+11.6% after +2.1%) and in water transport (+16.6% after +1.2%). It turned down in postal and courier activities (−3.6% after +2.4%) but increased again slightly in warehousing and support for transportation (+0.3% after +2.0%).

Rise in household services

In September 2019, output in household services went up (+0.7 after −5.5%). It bounced back in arts, entertainment and recreation (+1.7% after −9.7%) whereas it decreased in other personal services production (−1.3% after +3.8%).

Slight increase in accommodation and food service activities

In September 2019, output in accommodation and food service activities grew slightly (+0.2% after +2.4%), be it in food and beverage service activities (+0.2% after +2.6%) or in accommodation (+0.2% after +1.8%).

Slight withdrawal in information and communication

Output in information and communication dwindled in September 2019 (−0.3% after +2.4%). It fell back notably in motion picture, sound recording, music publishing (−3.3% after +3.0%), in edition (−0.4% after +2.2%) and slightly in computer programming (−0.1% after +2.9%) and telecommunications (−0.2% after +1.5%). By contrast, the output rose again in information services (+0.7% after +2.9%) and in programming and broadcasting activities (+0.7% after +0.8%).
