In Q3 2019, throughout metropolitan France, the number of overnight stays in tourist collective accommodation went up by 1.3% compared to the same period of 2018. Occupancy continued to grow but at a lower rate than in the second quarter of 2019 (+3,8% year on year). Non-resident attendance fell significantly in hotel
In Q3 2019, overnight stays in hotels were almost stable (+0.3% year on year), after an increase of 2.4% in the previous quarter. The decline of overnight stays in non-resident (−4.7%) concerned mainly Île-de-France. It was just offset by the dynamism of the resident customers. Attendance by residents increased sharply in high-end hotels.
Hotel attendance fell in Île-de-France, due to non-resident customers (−5.6%). On the other hand, hotel occupancy increased in provincial urban areas (+1.7%), driven by the increase in overnight stays by residents (+4.7%).

Attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodation picked up
The growth in the number of overnights stays in holiday and other short-stay accommodation (HOSSA) remained as strong as in the previous quarter (+2.6% year on year).
Occupancy increased in provincial urban areas (+6.2%), mainly for non-resident customers. The dynamic was strong in mountain areas (+18.6%), both for resident and non-resident customers. On the other hand, occupancy declined in Île-de-France (−2.9%) due to non-residents (−10.8%), as did hotel attendance. In coastlines and "other areas" attendance, the increase in foreign overnight stays did not compensate for the decrease in overnight stays by residents.

Occupancy in campsites was driven by non resident customers and coastline
Attendance in campsites increased by 1.5% over one year, mainly due to resident customers (+2.8%). Overnight stays grew in 4- and 5-star campsites (+4.2%), but also in unclassified accommodation (+5.3%). This increase concerned pitches with rental accommodation.
The dynamic was more favourable in coastlines (+1.9%), which probably benefited from good weather conditions during the summer.

Sustained attendance in early summer, favourable after-season in campsites
Overall, the number of overnight stays in tourist collective accommodation went up in July compared with last year, particularly in HOSSA and campsites. While August confirmed the good results of the beginning of summer in HOSSA and hotels, attendance was steady in campsites. Finally, September was a very positive month for campsites, while activity was down in hotels and HOSSA.

Warning: revision of the series concerning hotels.
As of January 1, 2019, data from non-responding hotels are imputed using a new method, based on their characteristics. This new method of imputing non-response tends to slightly reduce the total number of overnight stays (−0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2018) but has no impact on quarterly trends. Data has been unchanged for other types of accommodation.
INSEE conducts monthly surveys on attendance in collective tourist accommodation: hotels, campsites and holiday and other shortstay accommodation (HOSSA). These include tourist homes (including “aparthotel”), holiday villages, family homes and youth hostels. They do not include accommodation offered by private persons.
