In October 2019, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets slightly recovered to 0.1% over a month, after a 0.2% drop in the previous month. In large and predominantly food stores, the prices were stable after a decrease in September (−0.2%).

For further information:

Excluding hyper and supermarkets, the prices slightly rose (+0.1%), after a stability in September.

Considering all kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods also slightly increased in October (+0.1%), after a downturn in the previous month (−0.2%).

Year on year, the prices in hyper and supermarket rose by 1.8%, as in September

Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets grew at the same pace as in September (+1.8%). In large and predominantly food stores, the prices rose barely more than in the previous month (+1.8% in October after +1.7% in September).

In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods continued to slow down: in October they increased by 1.5% year on year, after +1.6% in September. For the fourth consecutive month, their increase was less marked than in hyper and supermarkets.

Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods grew by 1.7% year on year, as in September.

Over a month, little rise in food prices in hyper and supermarkets

In October 2019, the prices of food (excluding fresh products) sold in hyper and supermarkets slightly recovered (+0.1%), after a decrease in September (−0.2%). Year on year, they rose a little more than in the previous month (+2.2% after +2.1%).

This rise in prices over a month resulted from a rebound in other food products prices whereas those of meat and beverages were stable.

The prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets were stable in October after a decrease of 0.3% in September. Year on year, they accelerated: +3.5% after +3.3% in September and in August.

After a slight decrease in September (−0.1%), the prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets were stable. Year on year, they slowed down for the fourth consecutive month: +1.9% in October after +2.0%.

The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) rebounded in October (+0.2% after −0.2% in September). Year on year, their rise was more pronounced than in September (+1.7% after +1.5%).

Slight drop over a month in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets

In October, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets edged down by 0.1% after −0.2% in September. Year on year, they were a little less dynamic than in the previous month: +0.1% in October after +0.2% in September.
