In August 2019, the prices of oil in euros decreased (−6.9% after +0.1%). The prices in euros of imported commodities (excluding energy) fell back (−6.4% after +2.9%) as those of industrial raw materials (−10,8% after +6.1%). The prices of raw food materials decreased again (−1.1% after −0.7%).

Oil prices decreased

In August 2019, the prices of North Sea crude oil (Brent) in euros decreased (−6,9% after +0.1%) to an average of €53 per barrel. In dollars, the decrease was wider (−7.6% after −0.6%) because the euro depreciated a bit in July.

Industrial commodity prices fell back

In August 2019, the prices of industrial raw materials flew back (10.8% after +6.1%). They were driven by mineral materials prices (−11.8% after +7.2%), of which those of ferrous metals (−21.5% after +11.2%) and non ferrous metals (−1.0% after +2.2%). The prices of precious metals increased again (+6.7% after +5.1%). The prices of agricultural raw materials decreased more than in July (−4.0% after −1.1%) as natural textile fibres (−4.2% after −1.6%), natural rubber (−7.3% after −5.5%), pulp (−5.8% after 0.0%), sawn softwood (−6.1% after −0.5%) and tropical wood (−1.8% after −1.0%). The prices of hide recovered (+12.6% after −2.3%).

Food commodity prices kept decreasing

In euros, the prices of imported raw food materials decreased again (−1.1% after −0.7%) because of cereals (−2.3% after −1.0%), tropical foodstuffs (−8.0% after +2.1%), seafood products (−2.2% after +0.7%), and sugar (−4.1% after −1.7%), whose prices were penalized by high stocks levels and a surplus market. The prices of meats recovered (+7.5% after −6.3%) and those of oil seeds and vegetable oils kept increasing (+0.4% after +0.6%).

Petroleum products: prices of petroleum are quotations from the Rotterdam market which supplies European market.

Indices of non-energy raw materials imported by France: the indices calculated by INSEE are monthly averages of raw materials prices, weighted by their share in the French imports of raw materials (2010 = 100).
