In May 2019, producer prices in industry kept declining (–0.3%) Industrial Producer and Import Price Indices - May 2019

On all markets (French market and foreign markets), producer prices in industry kept declining in May 2019 (–0,3% after –0,4% in April). Those for the French Market edged down again (–0.4% after –0.8%) whereas those for foreign markets were virtually stable (–0.1% after +0.6% in April). Year on year, producer prices in industry slowed down sharply in May 2019 (+1.0% after +1.9%).

Producer prices in French industry: –0,3% in May 2019

On all markets (French market and foreign markets), producer prices in industry kept declining in May 2019 (–0,3% after –0,4% in April). Those for the French Market edged down again (–0.4% after –0.8%) whereas those for foreign markets were virtually stable (–0.1% after +0.6% in April). Year on year, producer prices in industry slowed down sharply in May 2019 (+1.0% after +1.9%).

FRENCH MARKET: –0.4%

In May 2019, French producer prices in industry for the French market fell again but at a more moderate pace (–0.4% after –0.8% in April). The prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water decreased by 1.9%, whereas those of manufactured products were unchanged (after +0,5% in April). Year on year, French producer prices in industry for the French market slowed down noticeably (+0.8% after +1.9%).

Seasonal fall in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water

In May 2019, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water remained down (–1.9% after –5.3%), concerning all the prices of energy production and distribution. Electricity trade prices declined by 2.5% (after –8.1%), those for gas selling by 1.7% (after –2.5%) and those for steam and air conditioning supply by 2.5% (after –1.3%). Year on year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water slowed down sharply (+2.7% after +4.5%).

Very slight rise in prices of refined petroleum products

In the wake of oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products increased very slightly in May 2019 (+0.3% after +6.0%) and fell back year on year (–0.8% after +7.3%).

Stability in prices of “other industrial products”

The prices of “other industrial products” were stable in May 2019 (after +0.1% in April). Chemical product prices grew slightly (+0.2% after +0.6%), linked with the past oil price increases. On the contrary, basic metal prices fell back (–0.5% after +0.1% in April), following the decline of prices for metals on the international market. Furthermore, paper and paperboard prices kept decreasing (–0.7% in May after –0.3%). Year on year, the prices of “other industrial products” slowed down (+0.4% after +0.9%).

Stability in food and beverage prices

In May 2019, food and beverage prices stabilized (after +0.1% in April). The prices of processed and preserved meat kept increasing (+0.5% after +1.6%), especially owing to pork market persistent tightening, whereas those of dairy products decreased by 0.5% (after –0.2%). Year on year, food and beverage prices grew by 0.9% (after +1.0%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: –0.1%

In May 2019, the producer prices of French industrial products on foreign markets were virtually stable (–0.1% after +0.6%) and slowed down year on year (+1.1% after +1.9%). Refined petroleum product export prices grew slightly over one month (+0.4% after +5.7%) but decreased year on year (–1.4% after +8.7%). The export prices of “other industrial products” fell back over one month (–0.3% after +0.3%), mainly owing to the declines in prices of chemical products (–0.3% after +0.7%) and basic metals (–1.1% after +0.5%), linked with the fall of raw material prices. Year on year the export prices of “other industrial products” stabilized (+0.1% after +0.9%). Food and beverage export prices were virtually unchanged over one month (+0.1% after +0.9%) and remained dynamic year on year (+2.5% after +2.7%).

Import price indices of industrial products: stability in May 2019

In May 2019, the import prices of industrial products were stable (after +0.6% in April) and slowed down sharply year on year (+0.6% after +2.0%). Import manufactured product prices were virtually stable in May 2019 (–0.1% after +0.4%), in each manufactured product family. Year on year, the import prices of coke and refined petroleum products fell back (–2.6% after +7.9%), those of “other industrial products” slowed down (+0.5% after +0.9%), as those of food, beverage and tobacco (+0.4% after +0.8%).
