Turning-point indicator

  • How to read it: close to 1, the indicator points to a favourable short-term economic situation (-1 is unfavourable). The uncertainty area is between −0.3 and +0.3.
  • Source: INSEE.

In the agrofood industry, the business climate is stable

The business climate indicator in the manufacture of food products and beverages is stable. At 107, it remains well largely above its long-term average (100). The decrease in the balances on overall order books and export order books is offset by the sharp increase in the balance on past production.

The business climate has slightly faltered in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods

In the overall manufacture of machinery and equipment goods, the business climate, already declining in March, has slightly deteriorated in April. At 100, it stands at its long-term average level.

The business climate has recovered in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products whereas it has markedly deteriorated in machinery and equipment. In this latter industry, it has fallen just below its long-term average level. It is stable in the electrical equipment branch, slightly below its long-term average.

In the manufacture of transport equipment, the business climate weakens slightly

In the manufacture of transport equipment, the business climate indicator has slightly decreased after gaining three points in March. At 102, it remains above its long-term average (100).

The climate indicator is stable in the automotive industry, below its long-term average.

In the manufacture of other transport equipment, the business climate has slightly deteriorated, while remaining above its average. This decline mainly comes from the decrease in the balances on personal production expectations and on overall and export order books.

The business climate deteriorates in « other manufacturing »

The business climate in the overall « other manufacturing » industry is less favourable : the corresponding balance has lost two points, falling to its long-term average.

By subsector, the business climate indicator has declined in basic metals and chemicals. Conversely, it has increased in clothing-textiles and « other manufacturing industries ». It is stable in the rubber and plastic products and in wood-paper.
