Producer prices in French industry: stability in February 2019

On all markets (French market and foreign markets), producer prices in industry were stable in February 2019 (0.0% after +0.4% in January 2019). Year on year, they remained up (+1.7% after +1.9%).

FRENCH MARKET: +0.4%

In February 2019, French producer prices in industry for the French market rose again (+0.4% after +0.3%). Manufactured product prices grew by 0.6%, after being stable in January, while the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water fell back (–0.4% after +1.2%) . Year on year, French producer prices in industry for the French market accelerated (+2.1% after +1.7%).

Strong rise in prices of refined petroleum products

In the wake of oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products increased anew in February 2019 (+8.6% after +0.1%), reversing the downward trend noticed in November (–11.8%) and December 2018 (–13.1%). Year on year, the prices of refined petroleum products rebounded sharply (+8.8% after –5.8%).

Fall in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water

The prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water fell back in February 2019 (–0.4% after +1.2%). Gas selling prices decreased again (–3.5% after –1.7%), following the decline in regulated fares. Sewerage service prices weakened (–3.3% after +0.4%). Year on year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water slowed down (+4.3% after +6.0%).

Virtual stability in prices of “other industrial products”

The prices of “other industrial products” were virtually stable in February 2019 (+0.1% just like in January). Basic metal product prices rose anew (+0.7% after 0.0%). On the contrary, those of fabricated metal products (–0.5% in February) have declined since July 2018. After being down for four months in a row, chemical product prices stabilized in February 2019 (+0,1% after –0.6%). Year on year, the prices of “other industrial products” remained up (+1.0% after +1.2%).

Virtual stability in food and beverage prices

In February 2019, food and beverage prices were virtually stable (+0.1% after –0.4%). Year on year, they rose again by 1.0%.

FOREIGN MARKETS: –0.6%

In February 2019, the producer prices of French industrial products on foreign markets went down (–0.6% after +0.6%), owing to the sharp fall in electricity selling prices due to the mild temperatures in Europe. Manufactured product prices rose again (+0.3% after +0.2%), especially those of refined petroleum products (+9.4% after +0.5%), in the wake of oil prices. The prices of “other industrial products” remained virtually stable (–0.1% after +0.1%), in spite of the new decrease in fabricated metal product prices (–0.7% after –0.9%) and the fall in chemical product prices (–0.2% after +1.1%). The prices of food and beverage declined sligthlty in February 2019 (–0.2% after +0.5%), especially those of beverages (–0.4% after +1.6%). Year on year, export prices of industrial products slowed down (+1.1% after +2.0%).

Import price indices of industrial products: +0.7% in February 2019

In February 2019, the import prices of industrial products recovered (+0.7% after –0.1%), owing to the combined rises in energy and manufactured product prices. In the wake of oil prices, import prices of coke and refined petroleum products sped up (+7.6% after +1.2%), just like those of imported hydrocarbons. Food, beverage and tobacco import prices decreased again (–0.4% after –0.2%). The import prices of “other industrial products” were virtually stable in February 2019 (+0.1% after –0.4%): the rebounds in prices of chemical products (+1.0% after –1.0%) and fabricated metal products (+0.9% after –0.4%), due to the rising prices of some raw materials, were offset by the decrease in others product prices. Year on year, the import prices of industrial products accelerated sharply (+1.9% after +0.7%).
