2018- n° 60In January 2018, manufacturing output decreased (−1.1%) Industrial production index - January 2018
In January 2018, output diminished sharply in the manufacturing industry (−1.1% after −0.1%) as well as in the whole industry (−2.0% after +0.2%).
Please note: in accordance with European directives, the industrial production indices use 2015 as base and reference year from this publication. The industrial production indices also switch from a fixed base index to an annual chained-linked index.
In January 2018, output diminished sharply in the manufacturing industry (−1.1% after −0.1%) as well as in the whole industry (−2.0% after +0.2%).
Manufacturing increased slightly over the last three months (+0.3%)
Output increased slightly by 0.3% over the last three months both in the manufacturing industry and in the overall industry.
Output went up in the manufacture of transport equipment (+1.2%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.2%). It grew slightly in “other manufacturing” (+0.2%) and increased in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+0.9%). Conversely, it decreased in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.3%). It was stable in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply.
Over a year, manufacturing output grew markedly (+3.6%)

In January, output dropped sharply in “other manufacturing” (−2.7% after +0.4%)
Output went down in all branches. It decreased sharply in pharmaceuticals (−5.1%), in “other manufacturing” (−2.3%), in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−2.1%), in chemicals (−2.3%), in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products and other non-metallic mineral products (−2.4%) and in that of wood, paper and printing industries (−2.6%). Finally, it also fell sharply in textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−4.0%).
Output slipped back markedly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (−6.7% after +2.0%)
After a rise in December (+2.3%), output went down in electricity, gas (−7.3%) because of mild temperatures in January.
Output decreased slightly in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.2% after −2.3%)
Output slipped back in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−1.9% after +1.1%). Conversely, it bounced back in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+1.3% after −4.9%).
Output slipped back in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−0.8% after +0.3%)
Output went down in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−0.8%) after a slight increase in December (+0.3%).
Output grew again in machinery and equipment goods (+1.4% after +1.4%)
Output rebounded sharply in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+4.2%). It grew slightly in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+0.2%). Conversely, it fell in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−0.6%).
Output bounced back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.4% after −1.5%)
Output recovered in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.4% after −1.5%) due to an increase in the manufacture of other food products and in that of beverages.
Rebasing 2015
From now on, the average of the industrial production indices is set to 100 in 2015. Moreover, a significant methodological change has been introduced, as the indices switched from a fixed-base index to a chain-linked index. This change aims at enhancing the relevance of the indices over a long period. Because of the weights updating, indices are also revised on recent periods. This methodological change is described in further details in the methodological documentation.
