In January 2018, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores have edged down over a month (−0,1%) after a stability in December 2017.
In January 2018, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores have edged down over a month (−0,1%) after a stability in December 2017.
Excluding hyper and supermarkets, prices rose at the same pace in January as in the two previous months (+0.1%).
Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods fell back slightly in January (−0.1%) after a stability in December 2017.
Year on year, prices in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.8% as in December
Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets increased at the same pace as in the previous month (+0.8%). The same is true in large and predominantly food stores (+0.8% year on year).
In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods remained more dynamic than in large distributors: they accelerated to 1.9% year on year in January, 0.2points above the previous month. It has been the largest increase since September 2013.
Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose by 0.9% as in the previous three months.

Slight decrease, over a month, in food prices in hyper and supermarkets
In January 2018, the prices of food (excluding fresh products) sold in hyper and supermarkets decreased slightly (−0.1%) after a stability in December 2017. Year on year, they rose scarcely less than in the previous month: +0.9% after +1.0%.
This slight decrease in prices over a month resulted from a sharp fall in meat prices partly offset by a moderate rebound in beverage prices whereas the prices of other food products were remained stable.
After a little decline in December (−0.1%), the decrease in meat prices was more pronounced in January (−0.4%). Year on year, they sharply slowed down compared with December: +1.0% after +1.3%.
The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets recovered slightly in January (+0.1%) after a decrease of 0.2% in the previous month. Year on year, they increased at the same pace as in December (+0.4%).
The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) were stable in January for the second consecutive month. Year on year, their increase was less pronounced than in December (+1.1% after +1.2%).
Downturn in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets
The prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets fell back in January (−0.2%) after a rebound in December (+0.2%). Year on year, the prices of these products decreased at the same pace as in the previous month : −0.2%.
