In September 2017, output fell back in services (−0.7%) after a rise in August (+1.1%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In September 2017, output fell back in services (−0.7%) after a rise in August (+1.1%).

Services output increased strongly over the last three months

Over the last three months (July to September), services production rose by 1.7% compared to the previous three months.

It grew in all sectors, especially in business support (+1.7%), information and communication (+2.0%), accomodation and food service activities (+2.0%), transportation and storage (+1.7%) and real estate activities (+1.2%). It increased more modestly in household services (+0.6%).

Output also grew sharply over a year

In services, output of the last three months rose sharply over a year (+4.8%), with an increase in all sectors.

Output went up strongly in business support (+5.3%), be it in administrative and business service activities (+7.2%) or in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+3.7%). It also grew sharply in other sectors: information and communication (+4.9%), transportation and storage (+5.8%), accomodation and food service activities (+5.2%) and household services (+3.2%). It increased more modestly in real estate activities (+1.3%).

Decline in transportation and storage

In September 2017, output in transportation and storage declined (−1.4%) after an increase in August (+0.7%). While it dwindled in land transport (−2.4% after +2.8%), it recovered strongly in air transport (+2.5% after −4.9%).

Fall in household services

Output in household services declined considerably in September (−2.3%) after an important rise in August (+4.2%). It folded strongly in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector (−3.8% after +5.9%). It also edged down in “other personal services” (−0.7% after +2.4%).

Sharp downturn in accomodation and food service activities

Output in accomodation and food services turned down in September (−1.6% after +2.4%). It dwindled in food and beverage service activities (−1.2%, after +2.4%) and in accomodation (−3.0% after +2.5%).

Slight decrease in information and communication

After an increase in July and August, output in information and communication faltered in September (−0.3% after +3.0%), primarily in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (−0.7%) and in telecommunications (−0.5%).

Stability in business support

In September 2017, output in business support activities was unchanged.

It slightly diminished in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−0.2% after +0.3%). In this sector, scientific research and development and “other professional, scientific and technical activities” went up (+2.3% each), but the other activities went down, notably advertising and market research (−2.8%).

Output was almost stable in administrative and business support activities (+0.1% after −0.2%). It grew in employment activities (+0.5%) and in other administrative and business support activities (+0.9%).

Revisions

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in August 2017 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points. Initially published at +1.0%, it has been stated at +1.1%.
