In September 2017, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores have edged down over a month for the first time since September 2016: −0.1% after +0.2% in August.

In September 2017, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets and in large and predominantly food stores have edged down over a month for the first time since September 2016: −0.1% after +0.2% in August.

Excluding hyper and supermarkets, prices rose again, but more moderately than in August (+0.1% after +0.3%).

Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods fell back, by −0.1% after seven months of continuous rise.

Year on year, prices accelerated again in hyper and supermarkets

Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets continued to grow in September (+0.8% after +0.7% in August), as observed since April 2017 The same is true in large and predominantly food stores (+0.8% year on year, after +0.7% in August).

In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose again and more markedly than in large distributors: in September, they increased by 1.8% year on year, after +1.7% in the previous month.

Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose slightly faster than in the previous month: +0.8% year on year after +0.7%.

Year on year, slight downturn in food prices in hyper and supermarkets

In September 2017, the prices of food (excluding fresh products) sold in hyper and supermarkets edged down (−0.1%) after ten months of stability or rise. Year on year, they continued to gather pace (+1.0% after +0.8% in August).

The slight decrease in prices over a month resulted at the same time from a sharp downturn in meat prices and a slight fall in the prices of beverages while the prices of other food products were stable.

After a marked rise in August, meat prices strongly fell back in September (−0.4% after +0.5%). Year on year, they accelerated again: +1.5% after +1.3% in August and +1.0% en July.

The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets slightly decreased in September (−0.1%) after a stability in August. Year on year, they rose as much as in the previous month (+0.5%).

The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) were stable (after +0.1% in the previous month). Year on year, they increased more strongly than in the previous month (+1.0% after +0.7%).

Downturn in the prices of cleaning and personal care products in hyper and supermarkets

The prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets fell back sharply in September (−0.4%). Year on year, the prices of these products declined again: −0.3% after −0.1% in August.
