Producer prices in French industry: +0.3% in August

On all markets (French market and foreign markets), producer prices in industry went up in August 2017 (+0.3% after a stability in July). Year over year, they gathered pace (+1.9% after +1.5% in July).

FRENCH MARKET: +0.4%

In August, French producer prices in industry for the French market rose (+0.4% after +0.1%). Prices increased in all the main industrial sectors except for electrical, computer and electronic equipment where they were virtually stable.

Strong rise in prices of refined petroleum products

In August, the prices of refined petroleum products sped up (+3.3% after +2.6%) in the wake of the petroleum price. The rise involved all refined petroleum products. It was especially pronounced for gas oil. Year over year, prices of refined petroleum products went up sharply (+12.6% after +8.9% in the previous month).

Further increase in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water

In August, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water kept rising (+0.7% after +0.3% in July), notably as a result of the rise in electricity prices. Prices of gas and of recovery of sorted materials also increased. Year over year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water gained pace (+1.4% after +1.0%).

Slight growth in food prices

In August, food prices went up slightly (+0.2% after a stability in July). This increase came mainly from the rising prices of dairy products linked with the high demand for butter and cream. Year over year, they accelerated (+1.8% after +1.5% in July).

Slight rebound in prices of “other industrial products”

In August, the prices of “other industrial products” recovered (+0.2% after −0.3%). Prices of chemical products, basic metal products and rubber and plastic products increased sharply, following the rise in prices of raw materials. Year over year, prices of “other industrial products kept rising (+2.1% after +1.8%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: 0.0%

The producer prices of French industrial products sold on foreign markets were unchanged in August (after −0.2% in July). The rise of refined petroleum product prices was offset by the decrease in prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment, “other industrial products” and mining and quarrying products, energy and water. Year over year, export prices of industrial products kept growing (+1.5% after +1.4%).

Import price indices of industrial products: +0.5% in August

In August, the import prices of industrial products bounced back (+0.5%) after six consecutive months of decrease. The rise stemmed mainly from refined petroleum products (+5.3%) and, to a lesser extent, transport equipment (+0.2%). Prices of other industrial products were stable or went down in all main industrial sectors. Year over year, import prices gathered pace (+2.0% after +1.4%).
