In June 2017, the sales volume in overall trade was virtually stable after an increase of 2.0% in May. It grew slightly in wholesale trade (+0.4% after +2.3%). By contrast, it fell back slightly in retail trade (−0.4% after +0.6%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.2% after +4.0%).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In June 2017, the sales volume in overall trade was virtually stable after an increase of 2.0% in May. It grew slightly in wholesale trade (+0.4% after +2.3%). By contrast, it fell back slightly in retail trade (−0.4% after +0.6%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.2% after +4.0%).
The sales volume in overall trade rose by 1.0% over the last three months
Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade went up by 1.0% compared to the previous three months. It rose sharply in wholesale trade (+1.4%). It went up more moderately in retail trade (+0.4%) – it increased by 0.7% in non-specialised stores and by 1.6% in retail trade not in stores, while it flattened out in specialised stores. Finally, the sales volume in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles also increased (+0.5%).
The sales volume rose by 3.2% over a year
Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 3.2% year on year. It rose significantly in wholesale trade (+2.5%). It also rose sharply in retail trade (+3.2%) – it grew in specialised stores (+2.7%) and non-specialised stores (+3.9%) as well as in retail trade not in stores (+3.7%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+6.0%).

Slight increase in wholesale trade
In June 2017, the sales volume in whosesale trade grew slightly (+0.4% after +2.3% in May). It increased again in wholesale of household goods (+1.6% after +3.6%), in wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.6% after +0.6%) and in wholesale on a fee or contract basis (+1.1% after +1.6%). By contrast, the sales volume shrank in other specialised wholesale (−2.3% after +4.2%) and in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (−1.6% after +0.7%). Finally, it flattened out in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+0.1% after +1.2%).
Slight downturn in sales volume of retail trade
In June 2017, the sales volume in retail trade fell back slightly (−0.4% after +0.6% in May). Among specialised stores, the downturn largely stemmed from a fall in retail sale of other goods (−2.0% after +1.6% in May) and in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (−1.3% after −0.6% in May). By contrast, the sales volume grew in retail sale of other household equipment (+1.2% after −0.7%) and in retail sale of information and communication equipment (+1.0% after +0.8%). The sales volume in non-specialised stores stagnated after a slight increase in May (+0.4%).
According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should rise in July 2017 (+0.5%), taking year-on-year growth to +3.3%.
Slight decrease in sales volume of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In June 2017, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back slightly (−0.2% after +4.0% in May). This decline was mainly due to a downturn in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−0.9% after +5.0% in May). By contrast, the sales volume gathered pace in sale and repair of motorcycles (+2.4% after +1.7%) and it increased in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+0.6% after +2.3%). The sales volume of motor vehicles was stable after a clear rebound in May (+3.9%)
Revisions
The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in May 2017 has been revised upwards. Initially stated at +1.6%, it has been set at +2.0%, mainly due to the revision of the raw series.
