In Q2 2017, the ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France decreased slightly, by 0.1 percentage points. The employment rate and the activity rate increased by 0.5 percentage points.

In Q2 2017, the ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France decreased slightly, by 0.1 percentage points. The employment rate and the activity rate increased by 0.5 percentage points.
The unemployment rate in France stood at 9.5% of active population in Q2 2017
On average in Q2 2017, the average ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France and the overseas departments (excluding Mayotte) stood at 9.5% of active population, after 9,6% in Q1 2017. It has returned to its early 2012 level.
In metropolitan France, the number of unemployed decreased by 20,000 to 2.7 million people unemployed; thus, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points quarter on quarter, standing at 9.2% of active population. It decreased among persons aged 25 to 49 and those aged 50 and over, whereas it increased for youths. Over a year, the unemployment rate fell by 0.5 percentage points.
Among unemployed, 1.2 million were seeking a job for at least one year. The long-term unemployment rate stood at 4.0% of active population in Q2 2017. It decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to Q1 2017 and by 0.3 percentage points over a year.

In metropolitan France, among inactive people as defined by the ILO, 1.5 million persons wished to work without being considered as unemployed according to the ILO definition: they made up the halo of unemployment. Their number decreased by 22,000 compared to Q1 2017 and was almost steady over a year (+2,000).

The employment rate increased by 0.5 points in Q2 2017
The employment rate of the population aged 15-64 years increased by 0.5 percentage points in Q2 2017 and stood at 65.3%, its highest level since 1980. It rose across all age groups, but more particularly among persons aged 50 to 64. Over a year, the employment rate increased by 0.7 percentage points.
The full-time equivalent employment rate stood at 60.4% in Q2 2017. It rose by 0.4 percentage points quarter on quarter, and by 0.5 percentage over a year.
The permanent employment rate increased by 0.3 points
Full-time employment rate stood at 53.3% in Q2 2017. It rose by 0.3 percentage points over a quarter, and by 0.5 percentage points year on year. Part-time employment rate stood at 12.0% in Q2 2017, increasing by 0.2 percentage points compared to Q1 2017 and Q2 2016.
Permanent employment rate for people aged 15-64 reached 48.9% in Q2 2017. It rose by 0.3 percentage points over a quarter and by 0.1 percentage points year on year. Fixed-term and temporary employment rate remained at 7.8% in Q2 2017. It increased by 0.4 percentage points compared to Q2 2016.

Underemployment was stable quarter on quarter
In Q2 2017, 6.1% of the employed persons were underemployed, as in previous quarter, a ratio decreasing by 0.6 percentage points over a year. Underemployment mainly concerns people who have a part-time job and wish to work more. Slack work stood at 0.3% of the employed.
The activity rate increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to Q1 2017
The activity rate of people aged 15-64 stood at 72.0% in Q2 2017, its highest level since 1975. It increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and by 0.4 percentage points compared to Q2 2016.

The ILO unemployment rate in Q1 2017 is unchanged and the employment rate has been been revised upwards by 0.1 percentage points, compared to the provisional estimate published on 18 May 2017.
