The unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 points in Q1 2017 ILO Unemployment and Labour Market-related indicators (Labour Force Survey results) - first quarter 2017

In Q1 2017, the ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France decreased by 0.4 percentage points. The employment rate was stable and the activity rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points

In Q1 2017, the ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France decreased by 0.4 percentage points. The employment rate was stable and the activity rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points

The unemployment rate in France stood at 9.6% of active population in Q1 2017

In Q1 2017, the average ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France and the overseas departments (excluding Mayotte) stood at 9.6% of active population, after 10.0% in Q4 2016.

In metropolitan France only, the number of unemployed decreased by 115,000 to 2.7 million people unemployed; thus, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points q-o-q, standing at 9.3% of active population. It decreased among youths and persons aged 25 to 49, whereas it was stable for those aged 50 and over. Over a year, the unemployment rate fell by 0.6 percentage points.

Among unemployed, 1.2 million were seeking a job for at least one year. The long-term unemployment rate stood at 4.1% of active population in Q1 2017. It decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to Q4 2016, and by 0.2 percentage points over a year.

In metropolitan France, among inactive people, 1.5 million persons wished to work without being considered as unemployed according to the ILO definition: they made up the halo around unemployment. In Q1 2017, the number of people in this unemployment halo rose by 20,000 compared to the previous quarter, and by 58,000 over a year.

The employment rate was stable in Q1 2017

The employment rate of the population aged 15-64years stood at 64.7% in Q1 2017, as in previous quarter. It rose slightly among youths and for persons aged 25 to 49. It was stable for those aged 50 to 64. Over a year, the employment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points.

The full-time equivalent employment rate stood at 60.0% in Q1 2017. It rose by 0.1 percentage points compared to previous quarter, and by 0.2 percentage points compared to Q1 2016.

The fixed-term and temporary employment rate increased

Full-time employment rate stood at 53.0% in Q1 2017. It increased by 0.1 percentage points compared to Q4 2016, and by 0.3 percentage points year on year. Part-time employment rate remained at 11.7% in Q1 2017. It decreased by 0,2 percentage points compared to Q1 2016.

Permanent employment rate for people aged 15-64 stood at 48.5% in Q1 2017. It decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to previous quarter and by 0.3 percentage points year on year. Fixed-term and temporary employment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points, at 7.8%. It increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to Q1 2016.

Underemployment was stable

In Q1 2017, 6.2% of the employed persons were underemployed, as in previous quarter, a ratio decreasing by 0.2 percentage points over a year. Underemployment mainly concerns people who have a part-time job and wish to work more. Slack work stood at 0.3% of the employed.

The activity rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points compared to Q4 2016

The activity rate of people aged 15-64 stood at 71.4% in Q1 2017. It decreased by 0.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and a year earlier.
