Downturn in business start-ups in February 2017 Enterprise births - February 2017

In February 2017, the number of business births for all entreprises shrank (−1.0% after +1.5%, seasonally and working-day adjusted) because of micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (−3.2%). However, start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs increased slightly (+1.1%).

+4.2% year on year (three months basis)

The raw amount of births added up in the last three months went up again compared to the same period one year before, but more slowly (+4.2% after +7.7%, in raw data). This rise concerns all categories of business start-ups: company births (+5.8%), sole proprietorship start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+4.5%) and micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (+2.7%). Transportation and business support activities remained the sectors that contributed the most to the overall rise1.

+5.6% year on year (twelve months basis)

The raw number of business start-ups totted up during the last twelve months kept growing (+5.6% year on year after +6.2% in January and +5.5% in December). This growth was mostly due to sole proprietorships start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs (+8.6%) and company births (+8.4%). Micro-entrepreneurs' registrations picked up too but more weakly (+1.6% year-on-year).

Two business set-ups out of five are self-managed micro-entrepreneurs' registrations

In February 2017, the share of micro–entrepreneurs' registrations in the businesses set up over the twelve last months has been at 40.2% since December 2016. One year before, it was 42.1%.

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in January 2017 has been raised by 0.4 points to +1.9% due to the revision of raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.
