In June 2016, the turnover fell back in wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (-0.6%). It shrank also in business support activities (-2.1%): in transportation and storage (-1.8%), in information and communication (-1.4%) and in real estate activities (-1.2%).
Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In June 2016, the turnover fell back in wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.6%). It shrank also in business support activities (−2.1%): in transportation and storage (−1.8%), in information and communication (−1.4%) and in real estate activities (−1.2%).

Downturn in wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In June 2016, the turnover of the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles shrank (−0.6%), after a rebound in May (+1.6%). It declined sharply for wholesalers on a fee or contract basis (−4.8%) and, to a lesser extent, for wholesalers of other specialised wholesale (−1.6%) and wholesalers of food, beverages and tobacco (−0.6%). By contrast, it increased for wholesalers of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.8%), wholesalers of household goods (+0.9%) and for wholesalers of information and communication equipment (+2.2%).
The turnover of the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles sector decreased slightly in Q2 2016 compared to Q1 2016 (−0.3% q-o-q) and compared to Q2 2015 (−0.4% y-o-y).
Significant decline in business support activities
In June, the turnover of business support activities slipped back sharply (−2.1% after +3.5%).
It shrank strongly in administrative and support service activities (−3.1% after +5.2%), more particularly in rental and leasing activities (−4.7% after +6.5% in May), in office administrative, office support and other business support activities (−2.9% after +4.8%) and in employment activities (−2.6% after +5.6%).
The turnover in professional, scientific and technical activities declined also (−1.3% after +2.3%): it fell back particularly in advertising and market research (−4.3% after +4.0%), in architectural and engineering activities (−1.3% after +3.5%), and in activities of head offices and management consultancy activities (−0.8% after +1.1%). On the other hand, it advanced again strongly and in scientific research and development (+5.7% after +3.7%).
The turnover in business support activities rose over the second quarter (+0.8% q-o-q) and over the year (+2.8% y-o-y).

Marked decline in transportation and storage
In June, the turnover of transportation and storage went down sharply (−1.8% after +2.5% in May). It declined strongly in land transport (−4.5%) and, to a lesser extent, in warehousing and support activities for transportation (−1.4%). By contrast, the turnover bounced back markedly in water transport (+4.7%) and in air transport (+2.6%). It increased again in postal and courier activities (+1.7%).
Although the turnover of transportation and storage shrank over the second quarter (−0.7%), it increased slightly over the year (+0.2%).
Drop in information and communication
The turnover in information and communication fell back in June (−1.4% after +1.7% in May). Almost all sectors were down, in particular publishing activities (−2.9%), information service activities (−7.4%) and motion picture, video and television programme production (−5.0%). It levelled off in computer programming, consultancy and related activities.
The turnover decreased over the second quarter (−0.4%) whereas it increased over the year (+4.1%).
Fall in real estate activities
The turnover of real estate activities slipped back in June (−1.2%) after three months in a row of increase (+1.6% on average between March and May). It surged over the second quarter (+2.9% q-o-q) and over the year (+5.5% y-o-y).
Revisions
The variation in the turnover for May 2016 has been revised upwards by 0.4 points in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles and in real estate activities and by 0.3 points in transportation and storage. It has been lowered by 0.4 points in information and communication. It remained unchanged in business support activities. These revisions are due to those of raw data (inclusion of late responses from businesses, changes of sector) and to the updating of the coefficients used for the adjustment of seasonal and working-day variations (SA-WDA).
