2016- n° 229In June 2016, the turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (−4.5%) Turnover in industry and construction - June 2016
In June 2016, the turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (-4.5%). It returned to a level close to that of April, after a sharp rebound in May (+5.0%) owing to major deliveries of transport equipment abroad. Thus, exports went down dramatically (-15.3%, after +19.3%).
Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted. The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In June 2016, the turnover fell back in the manufacturing industry (−4.5%). It returned to a level close to that of April, after a sharp rebound in May (+5.0%) owing to major deliveries of transport equipment abroad. Thus, exports went down dramatically (−15.3%, after +19.3%).
In the industry as a whole, the turnover declined sharply as well (−3.8%).
Rise over the second quarter (+0.6%)
Over the second quarter of 2016, the turnover rose in the manufacturing industry (+0.6%). This rise was only due to the manufacture of transport equipment (+8.4%), with an exceptionnel increase in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+14.0%). On the other hand, over this period, the turnover fell in all the others sectors: “other manufacturing” (−0.8%), the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.1%), the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−3.1%) and the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−0.6%).
The turnover grew more considerably in the industry as a whole (+0.9%) thanks to the buoyancy of the mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management sector (+2.2%).
Decline compared to the previous year (−1.2%)
In the manufacturing industry as well as in the industry as a whole, the turnover declined over the second quarter of 2016, compared to the same quarter of 2015 (resp. −1.2% and −1.0% q-o-q).
Over this period, the turnover tumbled in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−23.3%). It declined in “other manufacturing” (−1.2%), the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.0%) and the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−1.9%). Among the main sectors, the turnover climbed only in the manufacture of transport equipment rising, sharply compared to last year (+6.2%).

Slump in transport equipment (−19.5%)
The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment plummeted in June (−19.5%). It came back to its level of April after an exceptional bound in May (+27.1%) thanks to a major ship delivery. Then, the turnover tumbled in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−31.2%, after +50.8%). It fell too in the manufacture of motor vehicles ship (−1.5%, after +2.4%).
Decline in “other manufacturing” (–0.7%)
The turnover went down in June in “other manufacturing“ (−0.7%, after +0.3% in May). It decreased mainly in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (−1.2%), the manufacture of rubber, plastics and non-metallic mineral products (−1.1%), the other manufacturing industry: repair and installation (−0.9%) and the manufacture of textiles and wearing apparels (−1.5%). Conversely, it grew once again in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+0.9%, after +2.3%).
Drop in machinery and equipment goods (−1.3%)
The turnover in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods shrank in June (−1.3%, after +0.5%). It slipped back in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−1.9% after +3.1%) and it went on falling in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−1.5%, after −1.2%).
Fall in food products and beverages (−0.5%)
The turnover decreased in the manufacture of food products and beverages in June (−0.5%) after a rebound in May (+1.7%).
Slight fall in coke and refined petroleum products (−0.5%)
In June, the turnover fell again in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−0.5% after −0.9%).
