Please note: all the series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In June 2016, output decreased in the manufacturing industry (−1.2% after +0.1% in May). It declined again in the whole industry (−0.8% after −0.5%).

Manufacturing output diminished slightly over the second quarter (−0.2%)

Over the second quarter of 2016, output decreased slightly in the manufacturing industry (−0.2% q-o-q). It was virtually stable in the overall industry (−0.1% q-o-q).

Output decreased sharply in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−2.3%), and tumbled in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−11.7%). It was stable in “other manufacturing”. Conversely, output rose in the manufacture of transport equipment (+1.7%) and to a lesser extent in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.5%) and in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+0.3%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased a little (+0.3%)

Manufacturing output of the second quarter of 2016 grew slightly compared to the same quarter of 2015 (+0.3%, y-o-y). Overall industrial output was also up (+0.4%).

Over a year, manufacturing output soared in the manufacture of transport equipment (+7.6%) and rose more moderately in “other manufacturing” (+0.5%) and in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+0.9%). On the contrary, it shrank markedly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−3.0%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.4%), and plummeted in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−13.2%).

In June 2016, output fell back in “other manufacturing” (−0.8% after +0.4%)

Output decreased in most branches: sharply in other manufacturing; repair… (−2.3%), in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel (–5.8%) and in chemicals (−1.5%), and more moderately in the manufacture of basic metals (−0.7%) and in the manufacture of rubber, plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (−0.7%). Conversely, it accelerated in pharmaceuticals (+3.8% after +2.9%).

Output slipped back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−2.6% after +2.5%)

Output tumbled in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−5.1% after −0.4%) and fell back strongly in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−2.6% after +3.4%). It leveled off in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products, after a hike in May (+5.1%).

Output continued to decline in the manufacture of transport equipment (−1.7% after −1.3%)

Output dropped significantly again in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−2.6% after −1.3%) and in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−0.6% after −1.4%).

Output collapsed in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−12.4% after −21.0%)

Output plunged in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products, because of the shutdown of a refinery and blockades of several others in the beginning of June.

Output continued to decline in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.3% after −1.0%)

Output decreased again in the manufacture of food products and beverages, in particular in the processing and preserving of meat and production of meat products.

Output rebounded in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+1.9% after −4.2%)

Output rebounded in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (+3.0% after −4.9%). Conversely, it declined again in water supply; waste management (−5.5% after −3.0%).
