In December 2015, the sales volume bounced back in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.3%) and in accommodation and food service activities (+0.8%). It grew again in household services (+0.6%). Conversely, it fell in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-0.8%).

Warning: From the release of the indices for January 2016, on 31 March 2016, the turnover index series will be produced according to a new process, that improve their quality. The series will be recalculated over the period 1999-2015. Further information concerning these changes are available on the Web page of this index.

In December 2015, the sales volume bounced back in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.3%) and in accommodation and food service activities (+0.8%). It grew again in household services (+0.6%). Conversely, it fell in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.8%).

Rebound in retail trade

In December 2015, the sales volume recovered significantly in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.3% after −0.6% in November). According to early estimates, it should be virtually stable in January (+0.1%).

The sales volume rebounded in all forms of retailing: specialised stores (+1.6%), as well as non specialised stores (+0.9%) or not in stores (+1.0%). Within specialised stores, this acceleration was mainly due to the retail sale of other goods (pharmacy, clothings, etc.: +1.8% after –1.0% in November) and the retail sale of other household equipment (hardware, paints ; furniture : +2.7% after –1.7% in November).

The sales volume in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased over the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter of 2015 (−0.4%, q-o-q). However, while it increased compared to the last quarter of 2014 (+2.2%).

Decline in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In December, the sales volume in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−0.8% after +0.3%) mainly reflecting a stronger decline in sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−4.3% after −1.3%). However, it bounced back significantly in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories (+6.0%).

The sales volume of the whole sector declined over the quarter (−0.6%) while it increased year-on-year (+3.6%).

Upturn in accommodation, and food service activities

The sales volume in accommodation and food service activities recovered in December (+0.8% after −1.3% in November). It bounced back sharply in food and beverage service activities, spurred by restaurants and fast food services (+3.0% after −2.5% in November). On the contrary, the sales volume plunged in accommodation (−3.7% after +0.3% in November) due in particular to fears caused by deadly attacks on 13 November in Paris.

The sales volume of the whole sector decreased quarter-on-quarter (−1.4%) and year-on-year (−2.3%).

New increase in household services

In December, the sales volume in household services improved again (+0.6% after +0.7%). It increased mainly in sports activities and amusement (+2.2%) and in other personal service activities (hairdressing, etc.:+1.0%) As in November, it declined in repair of computers (−0.8% after −1.3%).

Over the last quarter, the sales volume in household services decreased slightly (−0.3%) and was virtually stable year-on-year (+0.1%).

Revisions

The change in the sales volume for November 2015 has been lowered by 0.3 points in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and in household services due to the new calculation of SA-WDA coefficients. It has been raised by 0.1 points in retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and by 0.2 points in accommodation and food service activities.

In January, turnover on large-scale food retailing shrank

In January 2016, the turnover in large-scale food retailing fell back (−0.7% after +2.1% in December). While sales declined for food products (−1.1% after +1.7%). and automotive fuel (−3.0% after +1.3%), sales of non-food products rebounded significantly (+3.9% after −1.8%).
