2016- n° 119In March 2016, manufacturing output decreased again (−0.9%) Industrial production index - March 2016
In March 2016, output decreased sharply again in the manufacturing industry (-0.9% after -1.4% in February), and more moderately in the whole industry (-0.3% after -1.3%).
Please note: all the series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
In March 2016, output decreased sharply again in the manufacturing industry (−0.9% after −1.4% in February), and more moderately in the whole industry (−0.3% after −1.3%).
Manufacturing output diminished over Q1 2016 (−0.7%)
Over the first quarter of 2016, output diminished in the manufacturing industry (−0.7% q-o-q) as well as in the overall industry (−0.6%), compared to the fourth quarter of 2015.
Output decreased in most major manufacturing branches. It declined in other manufacturing (−1.0%), and even more in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (−3.3%). It dipped in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.4%), and dropped significantly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−5.4%). Conversely, output jumped in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.8%). In the mining and quarrying; energy; water supply industry it rose slightly (+0.3%).
Over the year, manufacturing output increased (+0.9%)
Manufacturing output of the first quarter of 2016 improved compared to the first quarter of 2015 (+0.9%, y-o-y); so did overall industrial output (+0.5% y-o-y).
Over the year, manufacturing output grew sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.9%), and to a lesser extent in other manufacturing (+0.7%) and in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment (+1.0%). Conversely, it dropped in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (−2.4%) and plummeted in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−8.5%). It was virtually stable in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.1%).

In March 2016, output went down further in “other manufacturing” (−0.7% after −2.0%)
Output declined significantly in many branches within “other manufacturing”: in chemicals (−3.2%), in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (−1.7%), in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel (−3.4%) and in the manufacture of wood and paper products; printing and reproduction of recorded media (−1.2%). Conversely, it recovered in pharmaceuticals (+2.7% after −5.8%). It was steady in the remaining branches of “other manufacturing”.
Output deteriorated in the electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (−1.8% after −0.3%)
Output tumbled in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−3.7%), and slid in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−0.5%) and in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−0.8%).
Output fell back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.0% after +1.0%)
Output shrank in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.0% after +1.0%), in particular in the processing and preparation of meat.
Output decreased again in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.7% after −2.3%)
Output fell back sharply in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−3.1% after +2.3%). However, it picked up in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+1.3%) after a marked fall in February (−5.9%).
Output bounced back in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+3.7% after −1.1%)
Output regained momentum in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (+5.0 after −0.8%) due to cool temperatures in March.
Output recovered in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+1.8% after −3.9%)
Output rebounded in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+1.8%) after a sharp downturn in February (−3.9%).
