Producer price indices in French industry: +0.1% in March

FRENCH MARKET: +0.1% in March

In March 2015, French producer prices in industry for the French market were virtually stable (+0.1% following +0.8% in February). In all the main industrial sectors, prices were unchanged or moved up, except prices for mining and quarrying products, energy, and water.

Mixed movements in energy prices

In March, prices for refined petroleum products continued to rise, but at a slower pace following the significant rebound in February (+4.3% in March after +14.0% in February), driven by moderately higher Brent crude prices in euros.

Prices for “mining and quarrying products, energy, and water” moved down (–1.0%), mainly due to the decline in prices on the electricity wholesale market.

Food prices remained steady

For the second consecutive month, food prices were almost unchanged (+0.1% in March following –0.1% in February). By product, price movements were mixed: from +2.4% for cocoa, chocolate and sugar confectionery, which benefited from the approach of the Easter season, to –1.2% for dairy and cheese products which are exposed to foreign competition.

Prices for electrical, electronic and computer equipment moved up

In March, prices for “electrical, electronic and computer equipment” increased (+0.3%), mainly driven by the rise in prices for machines and equipment (+0.5%) due to higher prices for certain intrants.

FOREIGN MARKETS: +0.2% in March

Producer prices of French industrial products sold on foreign markets continued to increase (+0.2% in March after +0.8% in February). The advance was mainly due to the significant rise in prices for refined petroleum products (+5.5%), but also, to a lesser extent, to the other main industrial sectors. Electricity and gas prices were the only ones to decline.

ALL MARKETS: +0.1% in March

On all markets, prices were almost unchanged (+0.1% after +0.8%). Year over year, they declined by 1.5% for the whole industry, mainly due to refined petroleum products (–22.6%) and food products (–1.9%).

Import price indices of industrial products: +0.7% in March

In March, import prices continued to advance but slower (+0.7% after +1.5%). Prices rose in all the main sectors of the manufacturing industry, except prices for transport equipment which fell slightly. Prices for refined petroleum products rose the most (+2.0%), followed by prices for other industrial products (+0.8%), most notably basic metals.
