In August 2015, the turnover fell once more in the manufacturing industry (–0.5%, after –0.6% in July). However, exports rebounded (+1.4%, after –1.7%). In the industry as a whole, the turnover declined as well (–0.2%, after –0.6%).

Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted. The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In August 2015, the turnover fell once more in the manufacturing industry (–0.5%, after –0.6% in July). However, exports rebounded (+1.4%, after –1.7%).

In the industry as a whole , the turnover declined as well (–0.2%, after –0.6%).

Slight rise over the last three months (+0.2%)

Over the last three months, the turnover went up slightly in the manufacturing industry (+0.2% q-o-q) as well as in the industry as a whole (+0.3%).

The turnover grew substantially in the manufacture of transport equipment (+1.1%), buoyed by the improvement in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+1.8%), and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.0%). It rose moderately in the electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (+0.3%). On the other hand, it fell sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (–2.8%). It decreased more slightly in other manufacturing (–0.3%), with a more substantial drop in other manufacturing: repair and installation of new machinery and equipment (–0.8%) and in the manufacture of rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products (–0.6%).

Increase compared to last year (+0.6%)

In the manufacturing industry, the turnover went up by +0.6% over the last three months, compared to the same three months of the previous year.

Over this period, the turnover soared in the manufacture of transport equipment (+9.5%). It also grew, albeit more moderately, in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.7%) and in the electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (+0.5%). Conversely, it plummeted in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (–15.9%) and it dropped in other manufacturing (–0.6%).

Further decline in coke and refined petroleum products (–3.9%)

In August, the turnover dropped for the third month in a row in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (–3.9%, after –2.2% in July and –1.7% in June) due to a fall in producer prices.

Slight decrease in other manufacturing (–0.4%)

The turnover went down moderately in August in other manufacturing (–0.4%), after a slight rise in July (+0.2%). It fell mainly in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (–1.7%), the manufacture of rubber and plastics products (–1.4%) and other manufacturing: repair and installation (–1.1%). On the contrary, it grew in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (+1.2%), and the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+2.6%).

Downturn in food products and beverages (–0.7%)

The turnover fell back in August in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.7%) after an increase for two months in a row (+1.2% in July and +0.7% in June).

Fall in equipments (–0.8%)

The turnover declined in August in the electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (–0.8%) after a rise in July (+0.8%). It went down in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (–1.6%) and the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (–0.8%). Conversely, it picked up in the manufacture of electrical equipments (+0.3%, after –1.4% in July).

Slight rebound in transport equipment (+0.2%)

The turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment rebounded slightly in August (+0.2%, after –4.1% in July). It recovered considerably in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+4.0%, after –8.5%), but it declined once more in the manufacture of other transport equipment (–2.2%, after –1.3%).

Revisions

In the manufacturing industry, the variation of the turnover in July 2015 is revised downwards by 0.2 points: it stands at –0.6%, instead of –0.4% published previously. In the industry as a whole, the variation in July 2015 is revised by –0.1 points.
