In June 2014, the turnover rose significantly in transportation and storage (+3.1%), in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7%), in business support activities (+1.4%), in information and communication (+1.2%) and more moderately in real estate activities (+0.6%).

Every index in this issue is in value, seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In June 2014, the turnover rose significantly in transportation and storage (+3.1%), in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7%), in business support activities (+1.4%), in information and communication (+1.2%) and more moderately in real estate activities (+0.6%).

Bounce-back in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles…

In June, the turnover increased in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7% after –1.3% in May). In particular, it improved in the wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+2.1%), in other specialised wholesale (+1.9%), in the wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+2.8%), in the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (+4.9%) as well as in the wholesale of household goods (+1.3%).

The turnover decreased over the last three months (–0.4%) and over the year (–0.8%, y-o-y).

…and in transportation and storage

In June, the turnover of transportation and storage rebounded shaprly (+3.1%) after a two-month-in-a-row fall. It improved substantially in land transport and transport via pipelines (+4.9%), in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+2.2%), and to an even greater extent in postal and courier activities (+7.2%). Conversely, it went down in air transport (–2.1%).

The turnover of transportation and storage declined over the last three months (–1.1%, q-o-q) but improved slightly over the year (+0.2%, y-o-y).

Increase in real estate activities

The turnover of real estate activities increased in June (+0.6% after 0.0% in May). It rose slightly over the last three months (+0.4%) and over the year (+0.6%).

New increase in information and communication

In June, the turnover increased once again in information and communication (+1.2% after +0.6% in May). It went up in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (+2.7%) and in telecommunications (+1.7%). By contrast, it declined in motion picture, video and television programme production (–1.2%) and in information service activities (–0.9%). It was almost stable in programming and broadcasting activities (+0.2%) and in publishing activities (+0.1%).

The turnover of information and communication decreased slightly over the last three months (–0.2%, q-o-q) and strongly over the year (–1.7%, y-o-y).

Recover in business support activities

In June, the turnover recovered in business support activities (+1.4% after –0.9% in May). The turnover in administrative and support service activities rose (+2.4%) significantly, in particular in office administrative, office support and other business support activities (+3.0%), in employment activities (+4.1%) and in services to buildings and landscape activities (+3.2%). The turnover increased more moderately in the professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.6%): it rose in architectural and engineering activities… (+1.3%) and in legal and accounting activities (+1.6%).

The turnover in business support activities remained steady over the last three months (0.0%, q-o-q) and increased mildly over the year (+0.4%, y-o-y).

Revisions

The change in May was revised by +0.2 point in information and communication. Initially calculated at +0.4%, the turnover was revised at +0.6%. The change was revised by –0.1 point in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles and by +0.1 point in real estate activities. It remained unchanged in the transportation and storage and in business support activities.
