In September 2015, the turnover levelled off in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles. It fell back in business support activities (–1.4%), in transportation and storage (–0.9%) and in information and communication (–0.9%). By contrast, it increased in real estate activities (+1.0%).

Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In September 2015, the turnover levelled off in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles. It fell back in business support activities (–1.4%), in transportation and storage (–0.9%) and in information and communication (–0.9%). By contrast, it increased in real estate activities (+1.0%).

Stability in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In September, the turnover of the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles was stable out, after a decline in August (–1.3%). It decreased particularly in the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (–3.7%), in the wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (–0.5%) and in non specialised wholesale trade (–1.5%). Conversely, it increased in the wholesale of information and communication equipment (+3.0%) and in the wholesale of household goods (+0.8%).

The turnover of the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles was virtually stable over the last quarter (+0.1%) and remained steady over the year.

Fall in transportation and storage

In September, the turnover of transportation and storage went down (–0.9%) after a virtual stability in August (+0.1%). It declined markedly in land transport and transport via pipelines (–1.7%), in warehousing and support activities for transportation (–1.7%), and in postal and courier activities (–1.9%). To a lessen extent, it also decreased in air transport (–0.7 %). On the other hand, it surged in water transport (+7.1%).

The turnover of transportation and storage increased slightly over the last three months (+0.2%) sharply over the year (+1.0%).

Increase in real estate activities

In September, the turnover of real estate activities recovered (+1.0% after –0.1% in August). It went down over the last quarter (–1.0%) whereas it improved over the year (+1.7%).

Downturn in information and communication

In September the turnover of information and communication fell back after three consecutive monthly increases (–0.9% after +0.6 % on average over the previous three months). It diminished notably in telecommunications (–1.4%), in motion picture, video and television programme production (–2.6%) and in programming and broadcasting activities (–2.4%). On the contrary, the turnover increased in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (+0.6%).

The turnover of information and communication increased over the last three months (+1.2%) and year-on-year (+3.6%).

Significant fall in business support activities

In September, the turnover of business support activities declined significantly (–1.4%) after a virtual stability in August (–0.1%). It declined again in professional, scientific and technical activities (–1.8%), in particular in architectural and engineering activities (–5.8%) and in activities of head offices (–1.7%). The turnover went also down in administrative and support service activities (–0.9% after +0.6% in August), in particular in employment activities (–3.5% after +2.3%) and in office administrative, office support and other business support activities (–1.4% after +1.0%).

The turnover in business support activities improved slightly over the last three months (+0.2%) and sharply over the year (+1.5%).

Revisions

The variation between August 2015 and July has been revised by +0.2 points in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and by –0.2 points in transportation and storage. That same month, the variation has been revised by +0.1 points in information and communication and in real estate activities. It remained unchanged in business support activities.
