Producer price indices in French industry: +0.8% in February

FRENCH MARKET: +0.7% in February

In February, French producer prices in industry for the French market rallied (+0.7%), following three consecutive months of decline. This rise was mainly due to a rebound in energy prices.

Energy prices increased strongly

In February, prices for refined petroleum products rebounded (+13.1% in February after –12.6% in January), driven by significantly higher Brent crude prices. The depreciation of the euro against the dollar amplified this price hike.

Prices for mining and quarrying products, energy, and water moved up (+1.6% in February after –0.8% in January). Electricity prices advanced by 4.6% due to the rise in prices except for regulated tariffs. Conversely, gas prices continued to decline (–1.6%, after –2.1% in January).

Food prices stopped falling

After nine consecutive months of decline, overall food prices were unchanged in February. However, the price movements were more contrasted by product: from +1.1% for prepared animal feeds to –1.8% for processed and preserved fish.

Prices for other manufactured products fell anew

In February, prices for other manufactured products dropped anew (–0.4% in February, as in January). Prices for chemical products declined significantly (–3.3%), mainly due to lower prices for ethylene and styrene. The rise in prices for textiles, wearing apparel, leather and footwear (+0.4%), due to the arrival of the new collections, somewhat offset the overall decline in prices for other manufactured products.

FOREIGN MARKETS: +0.8% in February

Producer prices of French industrial products sold on foreign markets moved up (+0.8% after –0.3%). Prices advanced in all the main industrial branches ; the rise was particularly significant for refined petroleum products (+21.3%).

ALL MARKETS: +0.8% in February

On all markets, prices rebounded (+0.8% in February after –0.9% in January). Year over year, prices fell (–1.9%), in particular due to tumbling prices for petroleum products (–27.8% year over year) and to lower food prices (-1.9% year over year).

Import price indices of industrial products: +1.5% in February

In February, import prices leveled off (+1.5% after –1.8%), mainly due to prices for petroleum products (+20.3% after –12.5%) and food prices (+0.4% after –0.2%) to a lesser extent. Conversely, prices for transport equipment and for other industrial products dipped slightly (–0.1% and –0.3%, respectively).
