In May 2015, the turnover improved in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.3%). Conversely, it declined in information and communication (–0.8%). It increased in real estate activities (+0.5%). It remained virtually stable in business support activities (+0.1%) and in transportation and storage (–0.1%).

Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In May 2015, the turnover improved in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.3%). Conversely, it declined in information and communication (–0.8%). It increased in real estate activities (+0.5%). It remained virtually stable in business support activities (+0.1%) and in transportation and storage (–0.1%).

Slight increase in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In May, the turnover of the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles slightly increased (+0.3%), after an almost stability in April (+0.1%). It went up in the wholesale of information and communication equipment (+4.6%) and of household goods (+0.8%) as well as in other specialised wholesale (+1.4%). On the contrary, it decreased in the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (–2.6%), of food, beverages and tobacco (–0.6%) in the wholesale on a fee or contract basis (–0.6%).

The turnover of the wholesale trade improved over the last three months (+0.8%) but slightly diminished over the year (–0.3%).

Virtual stability in transportation and storage

In May, the turnover of transportation and storage was remained almost steady (–0.1%) after a fall in April (–0.6%). It dropped in postal and courier activities (–5.2%) and declined in land transport and transport via pipelines (–0.6%). Conversely it increased sharply in water transport (+4.5%) and more moderately in air transports (+0.6%). It was almost stable in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+0.1%).

The turnover of transportation and storage increased over the last three months (+0.4%) and over the year (+1.8%).

Fourth consecutive monthly increase in real estate activities

The turnover of real estate activities improved again in May (+0.5% after +0.3% in April, +1.7% in March and +0.8% in February). It increased sharply over the last three months (+2.6%) and over the year (+2.9%).

Decrease in information and communication

In May, the turnover of the information and communication sector fell down (–0.8%) after an increase in April (+1.3%). It shrunk in telecommunications (–2.6%) and in motion picture, video and television programme production (–2.5%) and diminished in programming and broadcasting activities (–0.3%). On the contrary, it bounced back in publishing activities (+1.5%) and in information service activities (+2.4%). It held steady in computer programming, consultancy and related activities.

The turnover of information and communication increased over the three months (+0.5%) as well as over the year (+2.1%).

Virtual stability in business support activities

The turnover of business support activities remained almost steady in May (+0.1%) after a three-month-in-a-row increase.

The turnover went up in professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.4%), thanks to an increase in architectural and engineering activities (+2.2%) despite a fall in activities of head offices (–0.4%), and in advertising and market research (–0.3%). The turnover in administrative and support service activities declined slightly (–0.2%): it decreased in services to buildings and landscape activities (–1.9%) and employment activities (–0.3%) but went up in travel agency, tour operator (+1.2%).

The turnover of business support activities improved over the last three months (+1.2%) and over the year (+2.6%).

Revisions

The change in April 2015 was revised by –0.3 point in business support activities. Initially calculated at +0.5%, it was revised at +0.2%.

That same month the change was revised by +0.2 point in real estate activities, by +0.1 point the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles and in transportation and storage, and by –0.1 point in information and communication.
