In August, overall producer prices of agricultural products increased by 2.1 % compared to June; year-over-year they rose by 7.8 %.

Price of cereals kept on rising, of 6.3 % over one month, due to a decrease in global production this season following a long period of drought in the United States and in the Black Sea region.

Oleaginous price rose in August (+2.5 %), driven by the rise in the price of sunflower whose global production was scarce due to the drought in Russia and in Ukraine.

Potato price fell in August year-over-year (–12.8 %).

Price of wine increased in August (+0.8 %), driven by quality wines (+1.2 %).

Price of fresh fruits rose in August year-over-year (+15.5 %). Peach became more expensive as a result of a decreasing supply compared with the previous season, resulting from the reduction of surface area devoted to its production and the bad weather this spring which spoiled some fruits. Price of pear increased as well due to a decreasing production in Europe.

vegetableProducer price of fresh vegetables

Price of fresh vegetables was lower in August year-over-year (-4.7 %). The price of melon showed a decrease: the harvests from different areas of production were partly put on sale at the same moment, which unbalanced the market. The supply was also higher than the demand for cucumber. The very hot weather in mid-August did not encourage cauliflower consumption. On the other hand the summer time stimulated the consumption of tomatoes, whose price increased. Lettuce price rose as well : heavy rains at the beginning of the spring deteriorated salad plants.

pigProducer price of pigs and large cattle

On a seasonally adjusted basis, price of animals went up in August (+3.5 %). The price of pig increased sharply ; this rise resulted from a sustained demand combined with a decreasing supply : the lack of profitability in this sector led to a progressive decline in production. Price of big cattle kept on rising, posting a year-over-year increase of nearly 20 % due to a progressive cut of livestock. Price of poultry partly reflected the increase in price of chicken feed.
