In January 2014, households’ confidence increased slightly. The synthetic confidence index gained one point compared to December.

Personal situation

Financial situation : expectations slighty increasing

In January, households’ appreciation of their past financial situation was almost stable (-1 point). Their opinion of their future financial situation gained 2 points. The share of households considering it was a suitable time to make major purchases was almost stable in January (+1 point). These three balances remained clearly below their long term average.

Savings: increasing

In January, households’ opinion about their future saving capacity increased (+4 points), as did their opinion about their current saving capacity (+3 points). These two balances remained above their long term average.

Households thinking it was an opportune time to save were more numerous in January than in December. The corresponding balance gained 5 points, after increasing by 2 points in December. It thus increased beyond its long term average.

Economic situation in France

General economic situation in France: improving

In January, households’ opinion about the future general economic situation in France improved again: the corresponding balance gained 4 points compared to December, after a similar increase last month. Their opinion about the past general economic situation also increased (+2 points). These two balances remained however distinctly below their long term average.

Future unemployment: fears increasind

Households were once again more concerned regarding future employment. The corresponding balance gained 4 points in January, after falling by 9 points in December. It still stood above its long term average.

Inflation’s appreciation: decreasing

In January, households’ assessment of past inflation decreased (-6 points). However households expectations about future inflation were stable. Both balances remained above their long term average.
