In April, households consumption in manufactured goods decreased by 1.2% in volume*, after +1.6% in March.

Durables: large decrease in car purchases
Expenditures in durables decreased drastically in April (–4.4%) after an increase in March (+2.0%). This decrease can be explained by a drop in car purchases (–9.5%), while they had already been decreasing in 2010Q1 (–11.2%). These decreases are the counterpart of the large increases in 2009Q4 (+12.5%).
Expenditures in household durables also decrease (–0.3% after 0.8% in March).
Textile: decreasing
In April, expenditures in textile decreased by 1.2% after being dynamic in March (+4.4%).
Other manufactured goods: increasing
Expenditures in other manufactured goods increased in April: +0.8% after +0.3% in March. The acceleration is attributable to the dynamism of purchases in hardware and books; meanwhile, those in jewelry decreased.
March growth of consumption in manufactured goods is scaled up by 0.4 point
The growth of consumption in manufactured goods is now estimated at +1.6% (+1.2% initially announced). The variation of expenditures in durables is upscaled by 0.8 point; car purchases are revised by +2.5 points and those in household durables by –0.1 point. Textile expenditures are upgraded by 0.9 point. Expenditures in other manufactured goods are downgraded by 0.1 point.
Revisions are larger this month than in the previous publications, but their magnitude is usual at this time of the year: they are explained by fitting on the revised annual accounts from 2007 to 2009 and the re-estimation of trading days and seasonal adjustment models, for volumes and prices.
To a lesser extent, they are explained by new informations on other manufactured goods.
