Présentation de l'opération

Organisme producteur :

Insee. Direction des statistiques d'entreprises (DSE)

Type d'opération :

Objectifs :

The calculation of industrial prices indices meets a national and European need.

The industrial production indices are subject to the European regulation on short-term statistics (EC "STS" regulation n°1165/98 of the Council of May 19, 1998, modified by subsequent amendments).

The industrial production indices are used to monitor the monthly trends in France's industrial activity: variations in the quantities produced by the secondary sector and industry, including the agricultural and food (IAA), energy and building industries.

In its use on a month-by-month basis, the index of all industrial production is one of the four major macroeconomic indicators of the health of the economy, along with prices, foreign trade and employment.

Annual growth of French industrial production can also be compared to that of the industries in the main developed countries. Finally, the annual industrial production indices also supply references to which other performances can be compared.

Période et mode de collecte :

The indices are calculated by INSEE based on the data collected in the branch surveys by:

- the SOeS (Observation and Statistics Service) for the construction and energy;
- the SSP (Service for Statistics and Forecasts ) of the Ministry for Agriculture;
- professional bodies.

Historique :

These indices have been calculated since 1990.

Méthodologie :

Since January 2013 and up to 2018, the industrial production index (IPI) has been and will be calculated with a base and reference of 100 in 2010 (previously base of 100 in 2005).

This index is a Laspeyres index of production volumes and is rebased every five years. The weighting applying, 2010 gross value added at basic prices, is constant.

The products monitored represent as well as possible the activity of the whole industry and are selected from all levels of the production process.

The monthly variations of the indices are made more easily interpretable thanks to the calculation of series adjusted for seasonal variations (SA) and for working days effects (WDA).

Autres spécifications :

The monthly indices are revised based on the fullest results from the branch surveys since the start of the period covered. Depending on these adjustments, the gross indices become definitive.
