Data collection
The housing survey is conducted face-to-face or by telephone. The interviewer interviews an occupant of the dwelling, who answers questions about the characteristics of the dwelling and about each of its occupants.
The average interview lasts just over an hour.
The interview is carried out by an interviewer, commissioned by Ipsos, during a home visit announced by letter and after making an appointment.
The 2020 survey was collected between October 2019 and April 2021 from 37,141 households in mainland France living in ordinary housing.

Sampling method
The sample of dwellings was drawn by INSEE from an INSEE dwelling register compiled from administrative sources. It is made up of 70,000 dwellings that are representative of regions, urban types, housing types (detached house or collective dwelling) and years of construction.
