Death

Any death occurring on the French territory must be registered with the civil registry office of the municipality in whose territory the person died, regardless of their nationality.

When a person dies, their death must be recorded in a medical certificate of death issued by a doctor. The issue of the person’s certificate of death forms the legal basis for the recording of their death. The notification of death leads to the registration officer drawing up a death certificate in the registers of the local authority where the death occurred.
