Business managers’ opinion on their expected activity has improved, but the general outlook of the sector remain deteriorated
In January 2025, business managers of the sector have reported being slightly less pessimistic than in December regarding their expected activity: the associated balance has bounced back while still remaining clearly below its long-term average. As for the balance on past activity, it has dropped again and moves even further away from its long-term average.

Business managers' opinion on their future activity is improving regardless of the type of activity considered (new building construction or maintenance and improvement activities): all corresponding balances have increased. While the balance of opinion relating in maintenance and improvement stands above its long-term average, the ones regarding new building (both dwelling and non dwelling) remain deteriorated, way below their respective long-term average.
However, business managers have displayed much more pessimism than in the previous quarter regarding the general outlook of their sector: the corresponding balance, which had slightly improved in October, has fallen back anew and now reaches a level unrecorded since 2015 (when excluding COVID-19 pandemic).
The economic uncertainty felt by building construction managers has dropped but still remains above its long-term average.

Order books are considered stable
In January 2025, the balance of opinion relating to the level of building construction managers' order books is virtually stable, below its long-term average.
Given their workforce size, building contractors estimate that their order books provide them with 7.9 months of work, a duration stable compared to that of December.
The production capacity utilization rate has rebounded
In January 2025, 36% of companies have reported being at the limit of their production capacity (production bottlenecks), meaning that they would not be able to produce more with their current resources even if they received more orders. This share has slightly decreased again, moving closer to its long-term average (34%).
The production capacity utilization rate has strongly bounced back this month, after its sharp drop in December: at 89.2 %, it has gone back right above its long-term average (89.0%). However, this indicator has been on a downward trend since October 2022.
Almost as many business managers as in the previous month have reported facing obstacles limiting their production: at 59%, this share is almost stable, below its long-term average. As many as in the previous month have also reported facing insufficient demand (36%), a share above its average for nearly a year. Business managers are also as numerous as the previous month to report facing workforce shortages (28%); this proportion stands at its long term average. As many business managers as in the previous quarter have also declared facing recruiting difficulties (72%), a share that stands well above its long-term average.
Fewer companies than in the previous month have reported facing only supply difficulties (23%), and the same number have declared facing only demand difficulties (18%).

The balance of opinion on expected prices has retreated
In January 2025, the balance of opinion on expected prices has retreated, but remains slightly above its long-term average.
The quarterly balance of opinion on cash-flow position has strongly deteriorated, returning below its long-term average. Regarding the quarterly balance of opinion on payment delays, it remains virtually stable, slightly above its average.
Opinion on workforce size has maintained
In January 2025, business managers’ opinion regarding both the past and expected evolutions of their workforce size remain almost unchanged: the two balances are virtually stable. The balance on past workforce size stands slightly below its long term average, the balance on expected workforce size stands slightly above its own.
