In the third quarter of 2024, in France, occupancy in collective accommodations, measured in overnight stays, decreased by 1.7% compared to Q3 2023. The decrease of the attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations is significant (HOSSA, ‑3.9%) and, to a smaller degree, in hotels (‑2.7%). Attendance was almost stable in campsites (‑0.3%). Despite the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, attendance in collective tourist accommodations in Île-de-France area declined over the entire quarter.

Hotel occupancy decreased compared to past year, except in high-end hotels
In the third quarter of 2024, hotel occupancy reached 66.4 million overnight stays, that is a decrease of 1.8 million overnight stays compared to its Q3 2023 level. Over a year, the decrease is more significant for non-resident customers (‑3.8%, that is one million fewer overnight stays), than for resident customers (‑2.0%, that is 820,000 fewer overnight stays).

In Q3 2024, only upscale hotels (4- to 5- star hotels) registered a higher occupancy (+1.5%). On the other hand, attendance decreased in unclassified hotels (‑9.2%), in 1- to 2- star hotels (‑7.0%) and in 3 star hotels (‑1.9%).
Overnight stays decreased in all areas, except on coastline. The decrease is particularly noticeable in Île-de-France area (‑7.5%), mainly due to the disaffection of non-resident customers in this area (‑11.3%, that is 1.3 million fewer overnight stays).
Business attendance, less significant in summer period, also decreased in Q3 2024 compared to last year. Business nights decreased over a year by 3.4% (that is 620,000 fewer overnight stays). The decrease was particularly significant in other metropolitan area (520,000 fewer overnight stays).

European customers disaffection, especially British one, in hotels
In Q3 2024, non-resident customers’ overnight stays decreased by 3.8% compared to Q3 2023. European customers occupancy decreased by 5.9%, in particular British one (‑20.1%, that is 805,000 fewer overnight stays). Contrariwise, hotels occupancy from the United States sharply increased, (+18.0%, that is 526,000 more overnight stays).

Attendance in holiday and other short-stay accommodations also decreased compared to its Q3 2023 level
In holiday and other short-stay accommodations, overnight stays decreased by 1.4 million (‑3.9%) in Q3 2024, compared to Q3 2023. As for hotels, attendance was pulled down by the disaffection of resident customers (‑3.9%) and also by non-resident one (‑4.0%).
Attendance decreased sharply in all non-urban areas. But it increased in urban areas, especially in Île-de-France, only thanks to resident customers.

Campsite attendance was almost stable over one year
In Q4 2024, overnight stays in campsites were 104.8 million, a level nearly equivalent to the same quarter in 2023 (‑0.3%, that is ‑270,000 overnight stays). Even if resident customers attendance decreased quite clearly (‑2.2% over a year, that is 1.6 million fewer overnight stays), it is almost compensated by the increase of the non-resident attendance (+4.3% over a year, that is 1.3 million additional overnight stays).
With almost 60 million overnight stays, the coastline remained the main destination for this type of accommodation (56% of total). In this area, occupancy decreased by 1.3% compared to the same quarter of 2023, whereas attendance in campsites further from the coastline increased by +1.1%.
Occupancy increased in 4- to 5- star campsites (+1.4%) and, on the contrary, it decreased in 1- to 2- star campsites (‑8.7%) and in 3 star campsites (‑2.7%). The attendance on pitches with rental accommodation increased (+1.5 million overnight stays) whereas it decreased on bare pitches (‑1.8 million overnight stays).
Revision
Compared to provisory data published on 11 August 2024, attendance evolution over a year in collective accommodations in Q2 2024 has been revised upwards, leading to a slightly less significant decline (‑3.6% instead of ‑4.0%).
