In Q4 2023, services producer prices fell by 0.2% over a quarter and rose by 1.3%

In the fourth quarter of 2023, producer prices of services fell over a quarter (-0.2% after +0.3%). Prices of services sold to households in France fell back (-1.3% after +0.7%) and those for foreign markets dropped again (-1.2% after -0.2%), while those for services sold to home businesses rose (+0.4% after +0.2%).
Over a year, producer prices of services –for all markets– accelerated in the fourth quarter of 2023 (+1.3% after +0.9% in the third quarter of 2023). They were 8.7% above their level of the fourth quarter of 2020.

Prices of services sold to households in France fell back (-1.3% after +0.7%) and those for foreign markets dropped again (-1.2% after -0.2%), while those for services sold to home businesses rose (+0.4% after +0.2%).

Acceleration of prices for information and communication services
In the fourth quarter of 2023, prices for information and communication services were back on the rise over a quarter (+1.7% after -0.5%), driven by higher television programming and broadcasting service prices (+19.9% after -7.0%). Over a year, prices for information and communication services also accelerated (+1.7%, after +1.0% in the third quarter of 2023). These prices were 3.3% above their Q4 2020 level.
Downturn of prices for transportation and storage services
In the fourth quarter of 2023, prices for transportation and storage services fell back over a quarter (-1.0% after +0.9%), due to the seasonal decline in prices for passenger transport services. Over a year, they slowed down in the fourth quarter of 2023 (+0.9% after +1.5%). They were 13.3% above their Q4 2020 level.
Rise of prices for accommodation and food services
Prices for accommodation and food services rebounded over a quarter (+1.0% after -0.3%), mainly driven by hotels and similar accommodation services (+2.6% after -0.6%). Over a year, prices for accommodation services slowed down but remained up sharply (+5.8% after +6.7%). They were 19.5% above their Q4 2020 level.
Rise of prices for professional, scientific and technical activities
In the fourth quarter of 2023, prices for professional, scientific and technical activities rose over a quarter (+0.6% after 0.0%). In particular, prices for services related to media representation rebounded sharply (+10.7% after -4.8%).
Over a year, prices for professional, scientific and technical activities slowed down slightly in the fourth quarter of 2023 (+2.5% after +2.8%). They were 6.7% above their Q4 2020 level.
Rise of prices for administrative and support service activities and for real estate activities
In the fourth quarter of 2023, prices for administrative and support service activities rose over a quarter (+0.3% after +0.4%). Over a year, they continued to decelerate in the fourth quarter of 2023 (+4.1% after +4.7% in the third quarter and +5.5% in the second quarter). They were 11.4% above their level in the fourth quarter of 2020.
In the fourth quarter of 2023, prices for real estate services went up over a quarter (+0.3% after 0.0%) driven by the prices for rental and operating services for owned or leased real estate (+0.4% after +0.1%). Over a year, they continued to decelerate (+2.4% after +2.5% in the third quarter and +3.6% in the second quarter). They were 7.2% above their level in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Services sold to households in France: -1.3%
In the fourth quarter of 2023, producer prices of services sold to households in France fell over a quarter (-1.3% after +0.7%), notably due to seasonal price downturns for transportation and storage services (-5.4% after +2.9%) and for accommodation and food service activities (-1.2% after +1.4%). Prices for real estate services were virtually stable (-0.1% after +0.3%). Conversely, prices for information and communication services rose (+0.2% after -2.8%), as did those for professional, scientific and technical services (+0.4% after -0.2%) and those for administrative and support services (+1.5% after 0.0%).
Producer prices of services sold to households in France decelerated slightly year on year in the fourth quarter of 2023 (+1.8% after +2.0%) and were 8.6% above their Q4 2020 level.

Services sold on foreign markets: ‑1.2%
In the fourth quarter of 2023, producer prices for exported services went down (-1.2%, after -0.2%), driven by the fall of those for transportation and storage services (-4.0% after -2.5%). In particular, prices fell for maritime and coastal freight transport services, (-3.4% after -9.1%), as well as passenger air transport services, due to increased competition. Prices for administrative and support services accelerated (+0.9% after +0.5%), as did those for information and communication services (+0.8% after 0.0%). Lastly, prices for professional, scientific and technical services fell back (-0.2% after +1.1%).
Over a year, producer prices for exported services fell sharply in the fourth quarter of 2023 for the fifth consecutive quarter (-5.3% after -10.2% in the third quarter). However, production prices for exported services were still 8.9% above their fourth quarter 2020 level.

Definition: Services producer prices indices (SPPI) measure the quarterly evolution of transaction prices, excluding VAT, of services sold by French businesses. They are calculated, by market and by product, based on the results of the survey “Observation of prices in industry and services” (Opise) operated by INSEE.
SPPI are calculated on four types of market segments:
- BtoB: business to business, corresponding to services sold to home businesses;
- BtoC: business to customer, corresponding to services sold to households in France;
- BtoE: business to exports, corresponding to services sold on foreign markets;
- BtoAll: business to all, corresponding to the aggregation of the three market segments BtoB, BtoC and BtoE.
