The synthetic indicator has gained two points. At 103, it has thus moved away from its long term average (100), mainly driven by a more favourable opinion than in December regarding their prospects of activity.

The opinion on the expected activity has clearly improved
In January 2024, building construction managers have held a more positive assessment than in December regarding their expected activity for the next three months. The corresponding balance of opinion has sharply rebounded and has moved slightly above his long term average. In the maintenance and improvement sector, the balance of opinion has increased again while it remains on a downward trend for new dwellings.
Building managers’ opinion about their past activity is stable, above its average.
Slightly less business managers than in the previous month have considered the evolution of their company situation to be unpredictable: the balance of opinion on the felt economic uncertainty has decreased.
The quarterly balance of opinion on the general prospects of the sector has improved very slightly but remains below its long term average.

The demand is judged to be stronger
In January 2024, the balance of opinion regarding the level of the order books of building construction managers has rebounded and has gone back above its long term average.
Given their staff size, building contractors have estimated that their order books provide them with 8.2 months of work, a slightly increasing duration that remains above its long term average.
The production capacity utilisation rate has dropped back
In January 2024, the production capacity utilisation rate has dropped back: at 90.4%, it remains above its long term average (89.0%).
42% of companies have reported to be at the limit of their production capacity (production bottlenecks), that is to say that they could not produce more with their current means if they were to receive more orders. This share has reduced compared to December (46%) but still remains way above his long term average (34%). 20% of business managers considered themselves unable to increase their production in case of additional orders due to workforce shortage and 4% due to supply difficulties.
More business managers than in the previous month have reported facing obstacles limiting their production. At 64%, this share stands right below its long term average. The proportion of business managers who declared facing a workforce shortage has increased slightly (38%) and remains way above its long term average. The proportion of those reporting supply difficulties has also risen a bit (5%).
79% of business managers have reported to be facing recruiting difficulties, a stable proportion over a quarter and way above its long term average.
The balance of opinion on expected prices has risen again
In January 2024, more business managers than in the previous month have predicted that they will increase their prices over the upcoming three months: the corresponding balance of opinion has increased again, moving away from its average.
The quarterly balance of opinion on cash flow position has rebounded and now stands above its long term average; the one regarding late payments has diminished and is now standing closer to its average.

The business climate in the building construction industry of December 2023 has been revised downwards by one point (after rounding) due to the late integration of some companies’ responses.
