The opinion on the expected activity has degraded in building structural works as well as in finishings
In December 2023, building construction managers’ balance of opinion about their expected activity has gone back while the balance on their past activity has slightly dropped again. Both have moved away from their respective average.
Building managers’ opinion regarding their expected activity has kept on dropping in both building structural works (since July) and in finishings (since October). The balance of opinion on the expected activity in finishings remains nevertheless slightly above its long term average.
Slightly more business managers than in the previous month have considered the evolution of their company situation to be unpredictable: the balance of opinion on the felt economic uncertainty has kept on growing.

Opinion on demand has degraded slightly
In December 2023, building contractors are slightly fewer in number to consider the level of their order books to be higher than normal. The corresponding balance of opinion has diminished slightly and has gone back to its long term average.
Given their staff size, building contractors have estimated that their order books provide them with 8.2 months of work, a duration that has slightly decreased compared to the previous month, but that remains above its long term average.
The production capacity utilisation rate is stable
In December 2023, the production capacity utilisation rate is stable: at 90.8%, it remains above its long term average (89.0%).
Slightly less business managers than in the previous month have reported facing obstacles limiting their production. At 63%, their share stands right below its long term average. The proportion of business managers who declared facing a workforce shortage has dropped slightly (37%) but remains way above its long term average. The proportion of those reporting supply difficulties has kept on dipping (4%).
The share of companies that have reported to be at the limit of their production capacity (production bottlenecks), that is to say that they could not produce more with their current means if they were to receive more orders, is almost stable, well above its average. 21% of business managers considered themselves unable to increase their production in case of additional orders due to workforce shortage and 3% due to supply difficulties.
For the first time since January 2023, the balance of opinion on expected prices has not dropped
In December 2023, slightly more business managers than in the previous month have announced that they will increase their prices over the upcoming three months. After a continuous fall across 2023, the corresponding balance of opinion is almost stable, standing way above its long term average.
