In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).

In July 2023, the volume of sales in trade fell by 0.7% over a month, after an increase by 0.9% in June.

In July 2023, the volume of sales decreased in the three main trade sectors

In July 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back over a month (‑0.9% after +0.9% in June). This fall was mainly due to the household goods (‑3.8% after +2.5%) and the “other machinery, equipment and supplies” (‑2.8% after +1.2%).

The volume of sales also decreased in July 2023 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.3% after +1.1% in June), both in specialised stores (‑0.4% after +1.2%) and in non-specialised stores (‑0.4% after +1.5%). The volume of sales bounced back slightly in retail trade not in stores (+0.2% after ‑0.6%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales fell back in the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: ‑0.7% after +1.2%) and in food, beverages and tobacco (‑2.8% after +5.7%), while it bounced back in the “other household equipment” (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +1.3% after ‑1.0%).

Lastly, the volume of sales decreased by 0.4% in July 2023 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, after a 0.7% growth in June.

Early retail trade estimate for August 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased sharply in August 2023 (‑2.8% over a month). From June to August 2023, it was 2.1% lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.

From May to July 2023, the volume of sales increased slightly compared to the same three months a year before (+0.2%)

The volume of sales of the three months under review (May to July 2023) in overall trade was 0.2% higher than that of the same period a year earlier. While it grew strongly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+11.8%), it decreased both in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑2.0%) and in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.1%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales decreased markedly in non-specialised stores (‑5.1%) and more moderately in retail trade not in stores (‑1.4%). Lastly, it was virtually stable in specialised stores (‑0.1%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in June 2023 is unchanged at +0.9% (after rounding), compared to the previous release.
