In May 2023, the overall producer prices in the French industry were down again over a month (-1.4% after -4.1%). Prices went down for products sold on the home market (-1.4% after -5.2%) as well as for those intended for foreign markets (-1.4% after -0.9%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices kept rising but slowed down (+3.4% after +5.0%).
Excluding energy, the producer prices in the French industry were down over a month (-0.5% in May 2023 after -0.3% in April) and decelerated over a year (+3.5% after +5.1%).

In May 2023, the overall producer prices in the French industry were down again over a month (-1.4% after -4.1%). HOME MARKET: -1.4%
In May 2023, the producer prices in the French industry for the home market fell over a month (-1.4% after -5.2% in April 2023), due to a fall in the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water (-2.2% after -13.9%) and those of manufactured goods (-1.0% after -0.5%). Over a year, the producer prices in the French industry for the home market decelerated: +5.8% after +7.0%. They were approximately 29% above their 2021 average level.
Fall in prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
In May 2023, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water continued to go down over a month (-2.2% after -13.9% in April 2023), driven down by the prices of production and trade of electricity (-2.1% after -15.1%) as the spot market price for electricity fell below €100/MWh, a level not seen since August 2021. Over a year, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water accelerated however (+17.6% after +13.5%). They were approximately 57% above their 2021 average level.
Drop of refined petroleum products prices
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products went down again over a month (-7.8% after -4.8%). They were significantly down over a year (-36.7% after -25.0%) but were still approximately 30% above their 2021 average level.

Fall of the other industrial products prices
In May 2023, the prices of the “other industrial products” went down again over a month (-0.9% after -0.7% in the previous month): prices of “other inorganic basic chemicals” were sharply down (-16.4% after -4.5%) as well as those of “other chemical products not elsewhere classified” (-11.7% after -8.6%). Over a year, the prices of the “other industrial products” fell back (-0.4% after +1.7%). They stood approximately 16% above their 2021 average level.
Downturn of food and beverage prices
In May 2023, food and beverage prices fell back over a month (-0.4% after +0.6%), this is the first fall registered since January 2021. Prices of processed and preserved meat fell back (-2.1% after +0.8%) given the drop in demand ; those of prepared feeds for farm animals continued to go down (-1.9% after -1.2%), as cereal prices eased. Over a year, food and beverage prices decelerated (+12.6% after +15.2%) but their rise remained sharp. They were approximately 30% above their 2021 average level.
Downturn of transport equipment prices
In May 2023, transport equipment prices fell back over a month (-0.3% after a virtual stability in the previous month) owing to those of motor vehicles (-0.6% after +0.2%). Over a year, they continued to be on a high rise (+9.1% after +10.4%) and were approximately 14% above their 2021 average level.
Rise of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery prices
In May 2023, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery accelerated slightly over a month (+0.3% after +0.1% in the previous month) driven by those of machinery and equipment not elsewhere classified (+0.5% after +0.3%) : in addition to demand outstripping supply for certain types of machines, parts of the previous rises in raw materials and energy costs were still being passed on in this industry. Over a year, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery decelerated (+5.9% after +6.2%) and stood 13% above their 2021 average level.

In May 2023, the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets went down again (-1.4% after -0.9%), driven down to a large extent by the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water. Prices of refined petroleum products were back significantly (-11.0% after -1.5% in April 2023) while those of transport equipment rebounded (+0.4% after -0.8%).
Over a year, the producer prices in the French industry for the foreign markets went down again (-2.9% after -0.3% in the previous month) but nonetheless stood approximately 13% above their 2021 average level.

Import prices of industrial products: -2.4%
In May 2023, the import prices of industrial products fell again (-2.4% after -0.9%), in particular those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water. Prices of “other industrial products” were still down (-0.9% after -0.7%) driven down by those of “other inorganic basic chemicals” (-10.1% after -6.1%). Prices of coke and refined petroleum products went down as well again (-7.9% after -6.4%) while those of transport equipment accelerated slightly over a month (+0.3% after +0.2%).
Over a year, the import prices of industrial products continued to fall (-10.4% after -7.8%). However, they were approximately 13% above their 2021 average level.
