In May 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased again (–4.3% after a fall of –2.4% in April seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional business births declined more sharply (–6.6% after –1.6%) than micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (–2.8% after –2.8%). The raw number of business births over the last twelve months (June 2021 to May 2022) decreased slightly (–0.9%) compared to the same period one year earlier (June 2020 to May 2021).

In May 2022, the number of business births for all enterprises decreased again (–4.3% after a fall of –2.4% in April seasonally and working-day adjusted). Conventional business births declined more sharply (–6.6% after –1.6%) than micro-entrepreneurs' registrations (–2.8% after –2.8%). Decrease in business births in trade

In May 2022, business births fell in all the main sectors of activity compared to the previous month. In particular, they decreased sharply in trade as a whole, including trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–7.6% after –0.6%). They also diminished markedly in construction (–4.6%) and in industry (–7.7%).

Decrease in business births over the last three months

The raw number of business births decreased over the last three months (March 2022 to May 2022), in comparison with the same months of 2021 (–3.0%). Micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations fell sharply (–4.4%) and conventional sole proprietorships’ births shrank strongly (–13.3%). However, company births remained buoyant (+5.3%).

Over this period, transportation and storage activities made the strongest negative contribution to the overall decrease (–22,000 business births compared to the same months of 2021, representing a contribution of –7.9 points)*. Half as many businesses were created in this sector as in the same period a year earlier. Within this sector, the strongest fall was in “other postal and courier activities” (–22,900 business births over the last three months in comparison with the same months one year ago); this sub-sector includes home delivery services.

* The contribution of a sector to the overall variation is the variation observed in this sector, weighted by the share of this sector in the total number of births.

Slight decrease in business births over the last twelve months

The raw number of business births totted up during the last twelve months dropped slightly (–0.9% year on year). The number of micro-entrepreneurs’ registrations declined more moderately (–2.8%) than the number of conventional sole proprietorships’ births (–10.2%). Conversely, company births increased strongly (+8.6%).

Revisions

The variation in the overall number of business births in April 2022 has been revised upwards by 0.1 points, to –2.4% instead of –2.5%, due to the revision of the raw data and the update of the SA-WDA parameters.

The definition of creation adopted by INSEE is based on the concept defined by Eurostat, to harmonize and compare European data.

The appearance of a market producer legal unit with no predecessor is considered to be a newly created enterprise by Eurostat. This concept of creation relies on new production resources.

The business start-up statistics include applications for start-ups as micro-entrepreneurs, starting from the data relating to January 2009. Since this date, sole proprietorships excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional sole proprietorships and start-ups excluding self-managed micro-entrepreneurs are called conventional businesses.
