Producer prices in the French industry: stability

In April 2022, the industrial producer prices stabilized over a month, after the unprecedented surge observed in March 2022 (+4.8%). This global stability masks significant rises for some products, notably in food, chemicals and basic metals, which were offset by the fall in electricity production prices. Prices of products sold on the home market stabilized (after +4.5%), while those for the foreign markets fell back slightly (–0.2% after +5.5%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices kept rising strongly: +25.0% in April 2022 (after +24.6%).

HOME MARKET: stability

In April 2022, the industrial producer prices for the home market stabilized over a month, after the strong rise in the previous month (+4.5%): the rise of manufactured product prices (+2.0% after +3.9%) was counterbalanced by the fall of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water (–4.1% after +5.7%). Over a year, the industrial producer prices for the home market accelerated, the rise reaching a record 27.8% (after +26.8%).

Seasonal fall of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water

In April 2022, the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water fell back over a month (–4.1% after +5.7%) but kept rising strongly over a year (+59.0% after +57.7%). Prices of distribution and transmission services of electricity fell considerably as is customary in April because of the changeover to summer rates. Moreover, electricity production and trade prices fell back over a month (–5.9% after +7.0%) and decelerated slightly over a year (+68.4% after +74.7%). On the contrary, those of trade services of gas through mains accelerated strongly over a month (+17.4% after +5.1%), as over a year (+195.3% after +150.1%).

In April 2022, the prices of the “other industrial products” kept accelerating over a month (+2.5% after +2.0% in March 2022 and +0.9% in February 2022), producers mainly passing on increases in raw material and energy costs. The prices were notably driven by those of basic metals (+4.7% after +4.3%), fabricated metal products (+2.0% after +1.4%), rubber and plastics products (+3.5% after +1.0%), the “other non-metallic mineral products” (+2.9% after +0.8%) and paper and paper products (+4.8% after +1.5%). Furthermore prices of chemicals and chemical products slowed down slightly (+4.6% after +6.6%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated in April 2022 (+17.2% after +15.7% the previous month).

New strong rise of food and beverage prices
