Tensions on the productive apparatus remain intense
In May 2022, the production capacity utilisation rate is virtually stable. At 92.5%, it stands above its long-term average (88.8%).
Almost as many business managers as in the previous month have reported that obstacles are limiting their production: their proportion (72%) is virtually stable and remains higher than its average level. The shares of those facing difficulties due to a workforce shortage (42%) and due to supply difficulties (36%) have fallen back this month.
At the same time, the share of companies at the limit of their production capacity, that is to say that could not produce more with their current means if they received more orders, has slightly decreased. Half of business managers have reported to be in this situation, against a third in average in the long term. More precisely, slightly less than a quarter of business managers consider themselves both unable to increase their production in case of additional orders and facing difficulties due to a lack of personnel, a share in slight decline in comparison to last month and much larger than in average. Likewise, the share of business managers unable to increase their production and facing supply difficulties has fallen back but remains well above its long-term average.
The balance of opinion on expected prices has increased again
In May 2022, business managers are more numerous than in the previous month to report that they will increase their prices over the next three months. The corresponding balance of opinion is at its highest level since October 1981.

graphiqueWorkforce size tendency in building construction

- Source: INSEE
The opinion on order books is almost unchanged
In May 2022, roughly almost as many business managers as last month have deemed the level of their order books to be higher than usual: the corresponding balance is virtually stable, far above its average. Besides, given their staff size, building contractors consider that their order books provide them with 9.0 months of work, an amount of time hardly higher than the previous month.
Revision
The business climate in the building construction industry of April 2022 has not been revised.
