In March 2022, the industrial producer prices accelerated strongly over a month (+4.6% after +0.7%), as over a year (+24.4% after +20.2%). These are the strongest rises recorded in the available series since January 1995. In addition to the inflationary context observed since mid-2021, the tensions generated in March 2022 by the war in Ukraine caused new price hikes (oil, gas, metals, food raw materials, etc.).

Producer prices in the French industry: +4.6%
In March 2022, the industrial producer prices accelerated strongly over a month (+4.6% after +0.7%), as over a year (+24.4% after +20.2%). These are the strongest rises recorded in the available series since January 1995. HOME MARKET: +4.3%
In March 2022, the industrial producer prices for the home market sped up strongly over a month (+4.3% after +0.9%), driven up by those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water (+5.5% after –0.2%). Those of manufactured products were also on a strong upward trend (+3.9% after +1.5%). Over a year, the rise of industrial producer prices for the home market strengthened, reaching 26.5% (after +22.4%).
Strong rebound of prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water
After a slight fall the previous month (–0.2%), the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water bounced back strongly over a month in March 2022 (+5.5%). Over a year, the rise is of an unprecedented magnitude: +57.5% (after +51.0%). The electricity production and trade prices accelerated over a month (+6.7% after +2.3%), as over a year (+73.8% after +65.5%). Those of trade services of gas through mains turned up over a month (+6.1% after –8.8%) and took off over a year (+153.7% after +139.5%). At last, prices of steam and air conditioning supply services sped up strongly over a month (+16.8% after +0.9%) and over a year (+128.2% after +96.3%).
Strong acceleration of refined petroleum product prices
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products sped up very strongly in March 2022: +29.5% over a month (after +10.8%) and +110.8% over a year (after +73.2%).

Strong rise of food and beverage prices
In March 2022, the food and beverage prices accelerated strongly over a month (+3.4% after +0.8%). Prices sped up notably for oils and fats (+26.2% over a month, after +3.2%), processed and preserved meat (+6.2% after a stability) and bread, fresh pastry goods and cakes (+2.7% after +0.7%). Year on year, the food and beverage prices accelerated sharply (+9.9% after +7.1%).
Acceleration of the “other industrial products” prices
Due to increases in raw material prices (petroleum, steel, aluminium, nickel, etc.), the prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated in March 2022 over a month (+1.9% after +0.9%), driven by those of chemicals and chemical products (+6.2% after +2.2%) and basic metals (+4.2% after +2.1%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” rose by 15.4% (after +14.2% in February 2022).
Slight rise of prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery and transport equipment
In March 2022, the prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery went up by 0.6% over a month (after +0.7%) and by 6.2% over a year (after +5.9%). At last, those of transport equipment were up by 0.4% over a month (after +0.2%) and by 4.8% over a year (after +4.5%).

FOREIGN MARKETS: +5.3%
After a virtual stability in February 2022 (+0.1%), the industrial producer prices for the foreign markets turned up strongly in March 2022 over a month (+5.3%): the prices of mining and quarrying products, energy and water bounced back sharply, driven mainly by those of electricity, while manufactured product prices accelerated (+2.6% after +1.0%). Over a year, the rise of industrial producer prices for the foreign markets strengthened, reaching 19.0% (after +14.0%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” accelerated over a month (+2.1% after +1.3%), especially those of basic metals (+5.2% after +1.1%) and of chemicals and chemical products (+3.4% after +2.8%). Year on year, they rose by 15.8% (after +15.1%).
In the wake of crude oil prices, the prices of refined petroleum products accelerated strongly over a month (+26.3% after +11.0%) and over a year (+111.1% after +75.1%).
Transport equipment prices turned up over a month (+1.1% after a stability) and rose by 3.6% over a year (after +2.9%).
The prices of food and beverages accelerated sharply over a month (+2.8% after +1.4%) and went up by 12.9% over a year (after +10.4%).
At last, prices of electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery accelerated at a more moderate pace over a month (+0.9% after +0.2%) and over a year (+5.1% after 4.7%).

Import prices of industrial products: +7.9%
In March 2022, the import prices of industrial products accelerated very strongly over a month (+7.9% after +0.8%) and over a year (+35.2% after +26.1%), reaching record rises according to data available since January 2005. They were strongly driven by those of mining and quarrying products, energy and water, mainly crude oil and natural gas, while manufactured product prices accelerated sharply (+3.1% after +1.1%).
The prices of coke and refined petroleum products accelerated strongly over a month (+29.9% after +8.2%) and over a year (+108.1% after +66.6%).
The prices of the “other industrial products” sped up over a month (+1.9% after +0.9%), driven by those of basic metals (+6.3% after +1.6%) and of chemicals and chemical products (+2.8% after +2.1%). Year on year, the prices of the “other industrial products” were up by 16.9% (after +16.1%).
The prices of food, beverages and tobacco accelerated strongly over a month (+3.8% after +1.2%), driven by those of oils and fats (+20.6% after +3.8%) and of processed and preserved meat (+5.9% after +2.4%). Over a year they rose by 14.4% (after +11.2%).
At last, prices rose at a more moderate pace for electrical, computer and electronic equipment and machinery (+0.7% over a month after +0.2% and +5.4% over a year after +4.9%) and transport equipment (+0.6% over a month after +0.1% and +3.2% over a year as in February 2022).
